NEW CALL OF DUTY GAME DRIVING PLAYERS TO MURDER
November 14 2010
Washington, D.C. – Throughout history all major cultural properties have endured high levels of criticism for their presupposed impact on the people who interact with them. In recent years that criticism has been focussed on things like music, movies,
and most recently video games. While none of those creative forms have ever undone society or caused anarchy in the streets the criticism and concern has endured and likely will in those mediums and in future products yet to be created.
Right now, however, it is video games that receive the brunt of the criticism and the anger of those who believe that culture is doomed. Whether it is the blood and violence, the interactivity, or simply the popularity of the medium it is video games that have become a hot touchstone over the last few years and as they become more and more popular, it’s likely the aggression is only going to increase. While much of that criticism is uncertainly unwarranted and even irrational, occasional incidents remind us that games do not exist in a world of their own and that with certain susceptible people real life danger is very much a real thing. That issue is now starting to hit a fever pitch with the recent release of the newest ‘Call of Duty’ game which is apparently bringing out the murderous instinct in players all over the world.
“Police were called to an apartment in the Washington area late last night on reports
of
a domestic disturbance. When we arrived we determined that a young lady had been assaulted by her boyfriend and that the assault was a result of his frustration with a video game that he had been playing,” said a police spokesperson. “As stated by the boyfriend he had been very frustrated by ‘campers’ in the game and had been showing his frustration through profanities and throwing his game controller. When his girlfriend attempted to calm him down she was assaulted. While we believe this was an isolated incident it is clear that such violence is not acceptable and the man has been charged. The young lady was treated and released.”
It’s believed that aside from possible jail time that the man could have his Xbox 360 taken away.
“Frankly, we have not been contacted about any of this. We certainly understand the concerns of parents about violence in video games but we, as always, believe firmly that violence in video games simply does not create violence in real life. Our users are more than capable of distinguishing right from wrong and reality from fiction,” said a spokesperson for Activision, the games publisher. “We do however understand that a number or people have been frustrated by the difficulty of certain elements of the game. In those cases we encourage people to simply step back and take a break rather than get frustrated.”
The spokesperson also noted that the game difficulty is adjustable.
“Games can be a very frustrating hobby to be sure. I can tell you that in my time I have
destroyed more than a few controllers in my time but I have never allowed that to interfere with my real life. I have destroyed things but never people but I may well be an anomaly,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “I have personally stayed away from recent Call of Duty games because I felt this uncontrollable rage building up in me. That is something that people, all people, need to do. They need to make that decision for themselves and hopefully this person has learned that. Hopefully other people will learn that lesson too before a real tragedy occurs.”
Two men were reportedly killed in Cleveland following a bout of Call of Duty but it’s believed there was a lot of alcohol involved and that the deceased were jerks.
