NEXT CALL OF DUTY GAME TO FEATURE U.N. PEACEKEEPERS
October 8 2010
Santa Monica, CA – As has been the case in every new art form, controversy has dogged video games almost from the beginning. At first, the complaints centered on the way in which games absorbed children, threatening to corrupt their moral virtue
and turn them into zombies. The controversy then turned to violence, and then eventually sex, all part of a very standard process that has afflicted film, television, music, and literature at one point or another. Now though controversy has reached new heights with the saga behind the Call of Duty titles, reaching into new and altogether more mature realms.
At the heart of the issue is the continuing drama between former employees of Infinity Ward and Activision who have been engaged in a new-to-videogames controversy of corporate malfeasance and profit margins. While the battle between the two parties will undoubtedly play itself out in court, the product, the games, at the centre of the battle have begun to suffer, and through that so too have the gamers. While the Call of Duty franchise will undoubtedly go on, the taint of money has likely damaged the final product, a reality that thus far gamers have been largely immune to unlike fans of other mediums. That reality is something that may enter living rooms in a very short time with word that Activision is currently planning an instalment of the franchise featuring United Nations Peacekeeping Forces as they do good around the world.
“Obviously the franchise has always been known as a shooter and while they certainly want to maintain some elements of that, they also want to keep the material fresh and vital and given the current state of the world having something like peacekeepers could really appeal to a lot of people,” said an Activision insider. “There will obviously be some shooting, at least in the vicinity of the peacekeepers but the idea is to make it as accurate as possible and so you will only be allowed to shoot if shot at.”
The Call of Duty franchise has thus far only been based in World War II or sometime in the future. The new game will be in the modern era.
“You’ll be going around to different neighbourhoods trying to quell feuds, work out
who owns the pig and things like that. There will be a good variety of missions with
things like collecting water, repairing toilets, and taking clothes to villagers. There will even be little minigames where you play soccer and chase the stick with locals, get medals and stand in front walls watching things,” continued the insider. “They are going all out to get the details right and are going to work hand-in-hand with the U.N. to make sure that every detail is right and that they are accurately depicting life as a peacekeeper. There won’t be a whole lot of killing, well none really, but they saw the success of ‘Heavy Rain’ and have decided that this is the way things are going and they want to get on board.”
The instalment is expected in 2012.
“Taking the action of the traditional is always a risk but the last time they made a major change like this they got the blockbuster ‘Modern Warfare’ franchise so sometimes those radical reinventions are exactly what is needed to revolutionize a franchise and a genre,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “However, fans of the series expect shooting and they are not going to get a whole lot of that. It’s very likely that the guns will even be locked down so that wise guys don’t get smart and start a war. That’s going to be a hard sell to a lot of players but if anyone can do it, it’s them.”
Designers are already apparently hard at work on a level which will depict a mass rape, which the player will stand helplessly and watch.
