NINTENDO HOPING FOR LONG AWAITED SALES BREAKTHROUGH WITH 3DS
June 15 2010
Los Angeles, CA – Without Nintendo there would be no video game industry. While it’s true that Nintendo did not invent video games, nor did they pioneer the business of video games, but what they did was change it forever. The introduction of the

Famicon and NES systems came at a time when the industry was on the ropes, ready to fall into history. Nintendo turned the business around and revolutionized the way games were made, leading ultimately to the multi-billion dollar industry that now entertains people all around the world.
Of course like any company Nintendo has had its ups and downs. Through the early years they utterly dominated the business, trouncing competitors such as Sega and NEC. By the mid-nineties though things changed with the introduction of the PlayStation. That machine, like the NES before it, changed the industry introducing 3-D graphics, a CD format, and a more adult atmosphere, something that left Nintendo struggling to keep up with the competition. Those difficulties persisted through two video game generations leaving many to wonder if the big N would even be able to survive. Survive they did though and in the current generation now coming back into previous form, even in the face of much stiffer competition than they ever experienced in the past. Now, hoping to catch some of the3-D magic sweeping the world, the company has introduced the 3DS, a machine that many feel may very make or break the struggling company.
“We are very excited to bring this market to the people. This has been the product of a lot of hard work by a great number of people and we are sure that gamers all over the world will enjoy playing it as much as we have enjoyed creating it. The 3DS is the next step in gaming,” said a Nintendo spokesperson. “With a formidable line-up of games this platform will have a launch like no other and forever change not only the way games are made but also the way games are played. We hope you will be as excited by the 3DS as we are.”
The system is tentatively slated for release sometime later this year. It’s believed that there will more, way more, than enough to go around.
“This is a risky game for Nintendo, so to speak. They have been doing this for a very long time and they have a history of innovation but one has to wonder if perhaps they

might be going a little too far sometimes. Everything seems to be going the way of 3-D so it’s good that they are trying it out, but risking that much money and public profile on something unproven could be their death knell,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “No one wants to see Nintendo go down, not even the competition, but they may very well be digging their own grave. When you see truly revolutionary products like Kinect and Move coming from the competition and you something like this you have to wonder where their head is at. Perhaps they deserve to lose if they are going to do this kind of thing.”
It’s believed that Sony will also be launching their own handheld, a successor to the blockbuster smash PSP, sometime soon.
“To think the other two companies are just going to sit back and let Nintendo do something that could have potential is silly. These companies are about creating great product. Look at that Kinectimals game for the 360. That is true innovation, the kind of innovation that will push video games into the future,” continued Hawthorne. “Look, Nintendo needed to do something totally different and that’s what they did but I don’t think this was the thing to do. They are pushing but they are pushing in the wrong directions. Perhaps they could seek some advice from their competitors and hopefully get back in the game. If not, then this may be the end of the company.”
Nintendo’s shares rose, albeit slightly, after the 3DS announcement.
