PSN DOWNTIME LIKELY UNRELATED TO DEATH OF OSAMA BIN LADEN
May 2 2011
Tokyo, Japan – Video game players are a volatile bunch. At the best of times they are simply passionate nerds, coming vibrantly alive when an anticipated title is released. However, that passion can turn sour very quickly. Seemingly small offences,
things like glitches in game play, can turn affection into anger in an instant, raising the hackles of even the most docile of game players. That has been very clearly on display in recent weeks with the outage of the PlayStation network which has left millions of gamers without access, something many gamers simply cannot abide.
The hacking and outage of that network, which goes far beyond simply being unable to access downloadable content or online game play, has riled the community like few other things in recent memory with many more than willing to burn the Sony in effigy. The momentous intrusion, perhaps the biggest hack in history, has pushed many gamers to the edge, most of whom are apparently unwilling to forgive even after company officials apologized and tried to make amends. Eventually the network will go up again, but many are already vowing never to return to Sony’s online service, believing that the damage has already been done. Sony officials however are hoping for the best, offering free downloads and promises of increased security, but for some, including terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, such amends mean little, despite evidence that action against the Al Qaeda leader had little or nothing to do with the recent downtime.
“We have no evidence that the men involved in the killing of Osama bin Laden were in any way affected by the recent downtime. While we know few details of the actual killing, there is little reason to believe that their inability to play on our servers resulted in this action,” said a Sony official. “We realize that many gamers become frustrated when they are unable to play online, but to our understanding that is not what occurred here. We believe the two events are unrelated.”
Scant details about the killing of bin Laden have been released, but President Obama did state that planning began last week, at the height of the outage.
“While we appreciate the hard work and diligence of all military personnel, who we know are very frequently avid gamers, we have as yet seen no clear link between their ability to play online and any kind of real life events. We understand that gamers are frustrated, but none have taken out that frustration in the real world,” continued the executive. “As we have always believed, we do not accept the notion that killing in video games relates to killing in real life. These types of things are generally unrelated, something we believe is very much the case here. We are very pleased that this terrorist leader has been killed, but we want to divest any connection with our recent problems.”
Officials from Microsoft, whose network has been up and running, had no comment on the death of bin Laden or on Sony’s recent problems.
“I would be very disturbed, very disturbed indeed, to hear that they finally got bin Laden because the soldiers got a little bored. I mean there are great stories of accidental discoveries, of people finding answers by looking away from the problem, but hopefully that is not the case here,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “Gaming is great hobby and a lot of fun, but it should never take you away from living your real life or doing your job, particularly if that involves tracking down the leadership of international terrorist organizations. I think if it’s gotten to that point you should probably put down the controller.”
Bin Laden was buried at sea. PSN should be back up and running sometime this month.
