SAM RAIMI READY TO START SERIES OF DELAYS ON WARCRAFT MOVIE

January 14 2010

Hollywood, CA – Arguably, ‘World of Warcraft’ is the biggest game to ever appear. Other titles have certainly sold more copies, and others have been far more influential, but no game in the history of the medium has ever had the type of prolonged success world of warcraft cover
that WoW has had. Now over five years since it was first released the game has not even had a dip in popularity, engaging gamers for endless amounts of hours in ways other titles have never even dreamed. That of course means one thing, a movie.

Though a big screen version of the game was announced a number of years ago, under the direction of Spider Man helmer Sam Raimi, little news had come recently, dimming the hopes that the film would actually make it to the big screen. In the interim Raimi directed another film, the horror flick ‘Drag me to Hell’ and was in negotiations to make another entry in the Spider Man franchise. With the sudden implosion of that latter project though Raimi’s schedule has suddenly opened up, raising speculation that the WoW movie could make it to the big screen sooner rather than later. The director has been elusive as to his future plans but, according to insiders, is already planning to start and then stop production on the film sometime in the very near future.sam raimi

“Raimi is very excited about the movie and what work has been done so far and he’s eager to get started in the delay process. Ideally what he wants is scant information leaking out, perhaps some concept art, and a whole lot of chatter but not release the movie for a number of years. Ideally that’s the plan,” said our insider. “Of course that depends on a lot of factors including the need for the studio to get the project moving. The two industries have rarely worked together closely and the results have been less than formidable when they have, but if Blizzard and Raimi have their way this project will be in development for a long time to come.”

There has been a great deal of speculation as to the plot of the movie but much of it focuses on the story taking place sometime before the events at the beginning of the WoW storyline, or possibly something completely different.spiderman 2

“The history of videogames being turned into movies has been, well it has been mixed, to put it kindly. I mean they will eventually get it right if they keep trying, I suppose, but it could still be a very long time. Remember that they started to make superhero TV shows in the fifties an didn’t get it right until ‘X-Men’ was released in 2000 so it could be a long time yet before anything good comes out,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “If they can keep this movie in development for a number of years, something that honestly is very likely, then perhaps they will have a shot at making it good. Luckily now that Raimi is free he will be able to dedicate all his time into delaying the film.”

It’s believed that the Spider Man franchise, which is currently in midst of a reboot, will have two or three films under its belt before the Warcraft film hits screens.starcraft ghost

“The interesting thing is whether or not the Spidy and Warcraft will be competing with one another. That could either be a delicious redemption for Raimi or a humiliating defeat. The advantage that Spidy will have is also its burden. After two or three or four or even more films the ideas will start to run out and so whichever one Warcraft competes against the fight will be on,” continued Hawthorne. “What they really need to be concerned about is whether or not the young people playing the game now will even be able to attend the film. The costs of movie going are very high and when you factor in babysitters or even the abundance of elderly at matinees, you might be seeing a disaster in the making but we will see, eventually I suppose.”

Raimi will reportedly test new ways of delaying the film and has been in contact with Terry Gilliam to help with the effort.
