SONY ANNOUNCES NEW POINTY STICK THINGY FOR PS3
March 11 2010
San Francisco, CA – Arguably, there has been no other creative form that has evolved as quickly or as comprehensively as video games. Part of that rapid growth is no doubt due to the accelerated rate of progress throughout the last fifty years, part

of it is a result of the companion growth of computer technology, but even combined those factors don’t account for the dramatic change between video games like Pong, a little over thirty years ago, to titles like Mass Effect 2 and God of War III today. Even film, well over a hundred years old, still hasn’t changed so dramatically.
Perhaps the most amazing thing about the medium is that the rate of progress and change is only increasing as the medium ages. Since the introduction of the PlayStation 2 ten years ago, an arms race between the major players has been raging, pushing the threshold of graphics and game play to heights that few early pioneers could ever have imagined
possible. In the most recent generation of home consoles that battle took a decided left turn with the introduction of motion control, a development that has started to spread throughout he gaming realm. With Nintendo once again at that top of their game competitors are chomping at the bit to get a piece of the motion game with Microsoft prepping ‘Natal’ and Sony announcing its own waggly stick thing for the PlayStation 3.
“There are many different things that the PlayStation Move is better at. One big
difference is how precise it is to track very subtle movement. At the same time, the
camera tracks where in a 3D space the controller is and also its angle,” said Sony’s President of worldwide studios Shu Yoshida. “So, people have to try our games using PlayStation Move to feel the difference. I really ask anyone to try our games. Don't just watch. It doesn't tell what's really happening. The player is the only person who knows how well your moves are translated into the game. We as game developers are very, very good at cheating and making systems so that you think you are doing something [laughs], but good gamers know immediately the difference because they can improve their skills and that kind of depth we can create with PlayStation Move compared to other systems.”
The PlayStation move will be, much like the Nintendo Wii controller, a small stick that you wave at the screen.
“The diversity of change that exists in the video game industry is really unlike anything not just in creative fields but in virtually every realm of business. Even cars with their varied shapes and sizes are still fundamentally the same, but video games show constantly changing technology which ultimately affects content,” said Scrape TV Gaming analyst Graeme Hawthorne. “Gaming has had this unstoppable growth in the last decade particularly, not only in terms of content but also in public interest, something that will likely only increase as more companies start to create stick things to point at the TV screen.”
Microsoft’s ‘Natal’ will not involve a stick or pointer but will instead capture motion via a camera, something that many critics expect will have limited appeal.
“Throughout human history people have liked pointing things. Spears, arrows, guns, people just like pointing things at other things, it’s a fundamental part of the human condition, something Nintendo smartly jumped on and now others will have to play catch-up on,” continued Hawthorne. “I’m sure Sony’s pointy thing will do well for them and continue the growth they’ve had over the last year. Sure, Sony fans made fun of Nintendo for a long time but we will now see if that was simply jealousy over not having their own pointy thing.”
Sony’s pointy stick will be available sometime later this year.
