ANTIDEPRESSANT INDUSTRY LONE BRIGHT SPOT IN SINKING ECONOMY
October 21 2011
Washington, D.C. – Just about every sector of the economy in the United States is suffering. While things have gotten a little better in the last little while, and much better than things were three years ago, many people in the country are still suffering, struggling to work themselves out from the bottom and upwards.
Virtually every industry in the U.S. has been negatively affected by the downturn and though some, like the car industry, have started to turn things around there is still great fear and instability in many sectors of the economy.
Not so in the drug industry which has seen record profits in the last few years, particularly in sales of antidepressants which have been on an upward climb for better than two decades. While other industries have continued to slide, drug sales have actually increased leading to record profits in the field and one of the lone places in the American economy seeing real health.
“It has been a great period, seriously. We have been turning record revenue and profit in the last couple of years. Frankly, we haven’t seen any of this downturn whatsoever. Our growth has been beyond anything we could have projected,” said a spokesperson for Bayer. “This is very much in line with the CDC findings, a study we were more than happy to participate in. It’s been a great run.”
Bayer, the maker of Aspirin, has also noted that sales of gross cartons of that product have increased tenfold helping their bottom line.
The CDC report indicated that antidepressant continues to rise across the country, though did not measure rates of increased aspirin use.
Use of those drugs has been on the increase since 1988, partially due to over prescription and aggressive drug sellers.
“There has certainly been a spike in the last few years, but that is tied to an overall upward trend over the last two decades. We believe the recent increase is tied directly to the economic conditions, which of course makes the use self-defeating. It is also possible, that because of the cost of these drugs and the effects they have on patients, that their use could have precipitated the economic meltdown,” said a CDC spokesperson.
“When people believe they are depressed they tend to act depressed, which makes them less likely to work and more likely to do risky things, like buying houses they can’t afford. Risky behaviour has long been tied to depression and drug use and we expect that this is exactly what has happened here. It’s been a boon for drug companies but really only benefited them in the big picture. Unfortunately, not everyone can work for a drug company. If they could the economy would be in much better shape,” continued the spokesperson.
Recreational drug sellers have also reported increases, though their numbers were not included in the CDC report.
