CANCER COSTS SOAR PROMPTING MANY TO SIMPLY GIVE UP
August 17 2010
Washington, D.C. – Disease is a part of life and it always will be. While many diseases are deadly, some horrifying so, there is no ailment that causes as much fear and anxiety as Cancer. In many ways cancer has become less of a disease and more

of a modern day monster, a beast that lives inside of us waiting for the right opportunity to strike and when it does it causes us to waste away and eventually kills us. No one is immune from cancer; there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide from the dread disease.
In recent years we have made major strides in fighting cancer. There are some forms that when caught early enough are relatively easy to defeat and though some monsters still exist, all in all our battle against the disease has taken a turn. However that success has not come without a cost, mostly financial, and that battle is one many the world are losing. The long and costly fight against the disease, repeated millions of times every year, has made cancer the world’s costliest disease accounting for 1.5 percent of the global GDP. With an aging population and new treatments on the horizon those costs are only going to increase leaving many to wonder if cancer is a disease even worth fighting anymore.
“We are literally being victims of our own success. More people are surviving infectious diseases and living long enough to develop cancer but the financial gap is widening ever further. Across the world more than 12 million new cases are diagnosed every year but there is not nearly enough money to fight those diseases and may never be,” said a spokesperson for the American Cancer Society. “The hard reality is that between treatment costs, loss of productivity, and the long term damage to people’s lives the financial burden is huge and ever more unwieldy and that will continue to be the case going forward. We may be left with no option but to simply lay down our arms against this disease and spend money on more productive things.”
Examples of places where money could be spent are on space travel, deep sea exploration, new energy sources, and self painting walls the latter of which many people agree would be really cool.
“There probably isn’t a person in the world who hasn’t been touched by cancer in one manner or another. Inevitably most people will experience it in some fashion as they get older and will start to lose loved ones as a result of the disease and may even get it themselves. There is no other disease in human history that creates as much stress and anxiety as cancer,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “It’s ironic because it is our success in fighting disease that has made this particular one so frightening and so damaging to human society. Our very success has created a new level of disease though mostly in the mind.”
Cancer killed approximately 7.6 million people last year.
“This has been a brilliant salvo by the disease. By being so tough and so ubiquitous it
has managed to outspend human beings rather than just simply kill us. That has put against the wall and forced us to make difficult choices as to what is important and what is not,” continued Phelps. “So the question is whether or not we continue to fight or we simply give up and spend the money we use fighting the disease to improve our lives while we have them. There is another option though, we could start to spend more money and kick cancer right in the teeth but that’s going to be a tough battle and one we might lose everything in fighting. It’s going to be a tough choice.”
Cancer advocates had no comment, as we expected.
