CONJOINED TWINS REUNITED AFTER SURGERY GOES AWRY

May 8 2010

East Cork, Ireland – There can be no greater joy than the birth of a child. Poets and philosophers have tried to articulate the feeling of parentage but been largely unable to truly capture the feeling. Even with 7 billion people on the planet, all of whom were pregnancy ultrasound
born at some point, there would seem to be less enthusiasm for the process yet it is still an intimate and catalyzing experience for all parents, whether they are on their first child or their fifth. It’s built into us to love the process.

Even when births go awry with disease or deformation the miracle of birth shines through. Though disappointment undoubtedly sets in, parents more often than not take on the challenge of raising their child with aplomb, eventually anyway accepting it as just one of the many challenges of being a parent. Such was undoubtedly the case for Angie and Azzedine Benhaffaf of East Cork, Ireland who were faced with the prospect of a challenging life for their newborn twins, Hassan and Hussein, who were born conjoined. Though more of a challenge than a serious risk, conjoined twins are nonetheless faced with difficulties that many parents would prefer their children not have to suffer, but now the Benhaffaf twins are facing yet another challenge in their shorts lives after being rejoined after being accidently separated by doctors.conjoined twins

“The boys were reunited for the first time today and it was very emotional to see them back together, in each other's arms. Our two little fighters have lived up to their name! It feels just like a miracle and we cannot believe we got our happy ending. Thanks to everyone for your continued support,” said Mom Angie. She made no comment on any kind of potential litigation after the accidental separation which came after the boys entered the hospital for what appeared to be the common cold.conjoined twins

“Separation surgery is something the majority of parents opt for when the conditions allow. There are many situations where conjoined twins share essential organs and cannot be divided without risking the lives of one or both of the children. The assumption by most medical people is that when they can be divided that is the best option and the parents will go for it, but that doesn’t appear to be the case here,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “Now the twins have had to go through two major surgeries, quite an ordeal for such short lives. It really is tragedy and it will be interesting to see where this ends up going. The doctors and the hospital are certainly to blame but separations surgeries take hours so one has to wonder where the parents were when all of this was going on and why they didn’t insist on knowing what was happening to their children. It appears that the blame will be spread around quite widely.”

The children are expected to be treated like freaks as they grow older, particularly by their schoolmates.

“Obviously medical mishaps happen all the time but that doesn’t excuse them. conjoined twins abby and britney
Whether you are in Ireland or America or anywhere else there has to be standard to medicine that is held higher than anything else. These types of things happen but they can’t be excused and someone will have to pay, if for no other reason than to ensure that this type of thing never happens again,” continued Waites. “Doctors simply cannot see something wrong and then take it upon themselves to correct the problem. They have a responsibility to check with the people, in this case the parents, making the decisions before just going ahead and making the change no matter how beneficial it might be.”

The Irish have traditionally frowned upon unasked for surgery but also don’t like freakish children.
