INCIDENT IN ENGLAND RAISES CONCERNS OF OVER PRESCRIPTION OF JESUS
May 31 2011
London, U.K. – Medical science has certainly made a great deal of advances in the last hundred years. People are living dramatically longer than ever before, and they are much healthier during those lives than our ancestors. Much of that has been a result
of things like good nutrition and a focus on physical activity, but one of the leading reasons we have been able to live so much longer and healthier has been because of advances in pharmaceutical drugs.
Whether it is the use of antibiotics or other drugs, the science of medicine has dramatically changed the makeup of human society, altering the way we live our lives and the way in which we look at them. Increasingly however many medical experts have become concerned about the regular use of these drugs, particularly as they start to see more and more drug resistant bugs appear on the scene. While none of these diseases have yet caused major problems for the population, it is entirely possible that in the near future a major outbreak of some resistant disease could very well wreak havoc, a concern which has many medical professionals deeply concerned about prescription drugs. Now a new case in England has prompted a fresh concern about such over prescription, though not with drugs, after a doctor was censured for repeatedly prescribing prayer to his patients in lieu of actual medical treatment.
“I only discussed my faith at the end of a lengthy medical consultation after exploring the various interventions that the patient had previously tried, and after promising to
follow up the patient's request for an appointment with other medical professionals,” said Dr. Richard Scott. “I only discussed mutual faith after obtaining the patient's permission. In our conversation, I said that, personally, I had found having faith in Jesus helped me and could help the patient.”
Scott, who has been a doctor for 28 years, was given an official warning from the General Medical Council, the governing medical body in the country. It is believed that this is not the first incident involving the doctor.
“We receive occasional complaints from across the country of similar incidents, but few are as actionable as this particular one. It became very clear to us over the course of the complaint process that this was not simply a discussion but rather a part of a medical diagnosis and prescription, and that type of action is unacceptable,” said a spokesperson for the GMC. “We have seen these type of incidents increase in recent years and we are deeply concerned that this is the start of a potentially dangerous trend. While we have no concerns about advising spiritual exploration as a component of medical treatment, we cannot support this type of whole body dedication to Jesus or any other deity. This type of advice is detrimental to proper medical treatment and can lead to significant health issues.”
Scott practices at a medical centre in the east of London which is well known for having a number of Christian doctors.
“The concern, and the quite rational concern, is that if people seek help from a higher power rather than a doctor, they may succumb to disease. Prayer has never proven to be an effective way to cure disease over the long term, and if prescribing prayer becomes too common it could be even worse,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “Understanding that they are praying to an omnipotent being, it is still possible that an overabundance of requests could result in many simply being ignored. After all, we have more people alive now than ever in human history and they will all become ill or injured at some point. That’s a lot for even a God to deal with, and if doctors start to over prescribe prayer, well some people will likely be ignored and, ultimately, not be healed. That is something no one wants.”
Scott has sought legal counsel and is praying for a quick end to proceedings.
