NEW STUDY FINDS AUTISM MAY JUST BE A PHASE KIDS WILL GROW OUT OF
January 26 2012
Washington, D.C. - There can be no trauma visited upon a parent, aside from the death of a child, greater than having a child born with a sever disability. When a parent has such a child there is no doubt that love still exists, perhaps even amplified, but all the hopes and dreams for that child pretty much evaporate, knowing that they will never fully integrate into society, that they will likely never live the life the parent wanted them to live.
That is, unfortunately, a reality for a lot of parents around the world, millions in fact, who have children suffering from varying degrees of disability. Now though, new hope has arisen for the parents of children with one particular ailment which may now be on the cusp of disappearing forever.
A new study of autism patients has found that many of the diseases in that spectrum may in fact only be temporary conditions, forging a new pathway to treatment to millions of families dealing with the debilitating disorder. While still early and conducted amongst a small group of children, the study shows that many aspects of autism may just be a phase, and that with proper levels of discipline and tough love children will simply grow out of the disease once and for all.
“We would suggest that clinicians, in addition to core symptoms of autism, they also need to provide an evaluation on these co-existing conditions and recognize that the conditions vary depending on the age of the child. That way, the best intervention for the child can happen as early as possible,” said Li-Ching Lee who co-authored the study.
Traditionally autism has been treated with a combination of medication, special education and social systems, all of which may be done away with if parents just stop indulging their children’s bad behaviour.
No specific recommendations, like locking a child in the closet, were made.
“This study, if accurate, will really be a godsend for a lot of parents. In many ways autism was a jail cell not only for the child but also for the parents. Having a child with such a time-consuming disability is something very damaging for not only the person afflicted but also the family unit as a whole. It causes great stresses on marriages and can inhibit more children,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “Parents shouldn’t get too worked up over this news but it is certainly a good first step in ending this affliction which affects so many children and families. Hopefully if nothing else it will cause doctors to look at how they are engaging and exacerbating the disease themselves, and that is a good thing.”
It’s not clear if current treatment methods are making autism worse, or simply providing an obstacle to a resolution.
“For a long time it was widely assumed that diseases like autism were just children behaving badly, and while that may be a bit of an oversimplification, it is not a completely irrational idea at least in respect to some parts of the spectrum,” continued Phelps. “If parents stop treating their kids like they have autism, they may just eventually grow out of it and become normal. It’s a tough thing to do, no doubt, but it can be necessary and ultimately beneficial.”
The study will now move onto Down’s Syndrome which researchers believe may have a similar resolution.
