SUPER BROCCOLI STILL LIKELY TO GO UNEATEN BY MILLIONS
October 30 2011
London, U.K. – Everyone knows vegetables are good for you and now a new product in Britain has made them even better. A so-called Super Broccoli, a version of the veggie with two to three times more heart-healthy ingredients, has been unleashed on supermarkets across the country with the hopes of bringing in a new generation of fans.
The new version of the vegetable will be available in the United States by the end of the year.
Already experts are expecting increased sales across the U.K. with record amounts of the product being tossed away having gone uneaten. It’s believed that while much of the food will simply be shuffled of dinner plates, the vast majority of the broccoli will simply rot away in the refrigerator having been the victim of good intentions but poor execution.
“Vegetables are a medicine cabinet already. When you eat this broccoli you get a reduction in cholesterol in your blood stream,” said Richard Mithen, lead researcher for the team that developed the new strand.
The super ingredient in the broccoli is Glucoraphanin, a nutrient which breaks down fat in the body. That nutrient has been amplified in the new version.
The broccoli also tastes sweeter due to decreased levels of sulphur, but that is believed to be unlikely to change attitudes towards the food.
“Broccoli is like any vegetable. People know it’s good for them and people are always eager to try things that are good for them but in the end, those things end up rotting away in the fridge. It’s not because of the taste or lack of attempt but because, well it’s what happens,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “The thing to do would be to make the broccoli taste like chocolate, or maybe Doritos. That would certainly do the trick for the majority of people. There would really be no excuse with that kind of taste and I’m sure that most people would just think it a shame to let something so tasty go uneaten.”
While sweeter, the broccoli apparently still tastes like broccoli and nowhere near the taste of chocolate.
Doritos-flavoured broccoli is believed to be scientifically impossible though it’s not clear how hard people have really tried.
“For the health conscious this is a good thing. If nothing else, it will get ordinary people excited about eating broccoli, and possibly other vegetables, for a little while and that means they will at least eat some. Eventually that enthusiasm will go away, but at least they will have some good stuff inside them,” continued Phelps. “And that good stuff will extend to their fridges, the drawers, the lining, and all their other foods until they finally realize that no one in the house is actually eating it and the sales just start to drop off.”
The super broccoli is now starting to break down in fridges across the U.K.
