CNN PREDICTS ELECTION PREDICTION

July 9 2008

Atlanta, GA – CNN has laid down the first prediction in the general Presidential election, sending competitors reeling. The world’s largest news organization has officially predicted that they will have a prediction about the winner of the election come this November 4.

The venerable Wolf Blitzer, along with the CNN political team (“The best political on television) made the official announcement on the network today. Competitors were left scrambling for a response.

democrat and republican symbolsFox News, perhaps the network’s biggest opponent, slammed CNN almost immediately, sicking Bill O’Reilly . “CNN has proven time and time again that they will do whatever it takes to get ratings. This kind of passive aggressive rhetoric is just one more example of how these idiots are scrambling to keep their little newscast afloat. There’s a reason Fox News beats them week in and week out and a reason we will continue to beat them.” Later in the day the network issued a statement that they “...will not indulge in speculation or predictions in respect to the upcoming election. When the election results start coming in, we’ll tell you who won.”

NBC was the sole member of the so called “traditional three” networks to respond to CNN’s prediction, stating that they would not predict having a prediction come election night, but that it was “likely” that they will have some kind of projection before the finally tally was officially counted. Queries to the CBS and ABC new divisions warranted brief “no comment” remarks.

Regardless of the immediate response of the competitors, CNN seems determined to position themselves as the leader in election coverage. From round the clock coverage of the primaries, to this newest proclamation, the network has made this year’s election its own election as it tries to wrest viewership away from competitors it once dominated.

“CNN has definitely fallen from their dominant status,” said 24 hour news analyst Crystal Favor. “They essentially invented the 24 hours news format and are now being pushed out by upstarts. Fox in particular. It seems they are driving this particular story very aggressively, hoping, one assumes, to regain that mindshare.  I predict that this strategy may turn some viewers back to their fold, but is unlikely to turn the tide against Fox. We will see though.”cnn logo

CNN had no comment on criticisms of their announcement today; both the New York Times and The Washington Post were also critical of the move, releasing editorials on their websites and the late editions of the papers. It appears the cable news giant will be driving through the critics with round the clock coverage on the prediction.

Anderson Cooper, the new star of the network, will also be driving the message home with specials on predictions past and present. “CNN is the true news leader,” Cooper said. “I predict that this prediction will put CNN in the driver’s seat for the election.”
