ATTORNEY GENERAL HOLDER DECIDES TO NOT READ ANY MORE LAWS
May 14 2010
Washington, D.C. – Law is the basis for any society. At their essence laws are an agreement by the masses to participate in a moral and ethical society, providing us all with safety, security, and the ability to pursue our lives unmolested by the lesser
elements of our society. Law too is the formalization of the differences between human beings and other animals. Our ability to choose our actions and not be a slave to our instinct is what makes us humans, and laws, as well as the enforcement of those laws, are the ultimate example of that ability to choose.
The power of the law varies from country to country and in some nations, such as parts of Afghanistan and Pakistan, it has little or no foothold, but the desire to organize under a social contract remains throughout human culture. In the United States the highest power in law enforcement is the Attorney General who runs the Department of Justice and acts as the head law enforcement official in the country. That of course is a big job with a lot of things to do so it’s understandable when the person in charge isn’t able to find time for the little things, something Eric Holder is finding out the hard way, particularly when it comes to reading new laws, particularly the new immigration law in Arizona.
“I have not had a chance to -- I've glanced at it. Well, what I've said is that I've not made up my mind. I've only made the comments that I've made on the basis of things that I've been able to glean by reading newspaper accounts, obviously, television, talking to people who are on the review panel...looking at the law,” said Holder. “We have people, they’ve looked at the law and we’ve decided on a course of direction as a result of that. It’s not necessary for me to read and analyze every law on the books just as it isn’t the responsibility of the Secretary of Education to decide the curriculum for every school.”
Holder has actively voiced concerns about the Arizona law but at ten pages is far too long for him to read.
“I don’t think that people really understand how involved having a major job with the
government can be. There are all kinds of demands on your time and there are hundreds of people looking for your ear, either for work or for politics, so it makes sense that those people seek ways to simplify their lives,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “They are only one person and so they can’t do everything that is expected of them. They have large staffs that do a lot of the leg work and then they take the accumulated information and make decisions based on that but they simply cannot be completely hands on all of the time. It’s just not possible, there aren’t enough hours in the day.”
Reportedly, Holder has directed his staff to give him synopses of the majority of laws read to him while he bathes in chamomile bathwater.
“Life can be hectic for the average person but when you add to that the pressure of being responsible for every law and law enforcement official in the country things are just compounded. Obviously people in the government have to be held to a higher standard but they cannot be held to inhuman levels of responsibility. Laws can very complicated and difficult to read so it’s understandable that he wants to avoid them whenever possible. He is only human after all,” continued Kinsey. “Obviously this law is a big deal right now and perhaps he should brush up on it a little bit more but you can’t expect him to go to superhuman levels. No one can be expected to do that.”
Holder is currently in the midst of planning a trip to the Barbados with his wife, Sharon Malone.
