CHENEY HAS MECHANICAL BLOOD PUMPING DEVICE IN HIS CHEST REPAIRED
July 14 2010
Falls Church, VA – A few years into his second term as Vice President much of the good will that had been afforded Dick Cheney had largely evaporated. By the time that term ended even his most ardent supporters had demurred when the issue of his
time in office came up. Cheney thought didn’t take the criticism lying down. In the first few months of his departure from office he became perhaps the most vocal critic of President Obama and his policies, earning himself no new supporters in the process.
For many people such criticism would seem an ignominious end for a person who had dedicated almost his entire adult life to the service of his country. The endless criticism, the harsh nicknames, and the continued isolation from the political infrastructure that had been his home for so long had to have been hard on the man, despite his stoic exterior. Cheney is after all still human, at least predominately, no matter what ferocious names his opponents are able to concoct for him. While few will ever know what thoughts have rolled through his head over the last few years, at least a few people know what has laid inside his heart, namely the doctors and mechanics who just recently did an overhaul on the mechanics keeping him alive.
“The operation went very well and he is now recuperating. A left ventricular assist
device was implanted when it became clear that he was entering a new phase of the disease. Congestive heart failure is relatively common in people of this age and people with his kind of history and this device helps to stave off the worst of that condition,” said a Cheney spokesperson. “This device is very much a bridge technology that allows a period for patients to eventually receive a transplant at least that is the case with most patients. The doctors are aggressively treating him and although he won’t be running any marathons this should allow him to live a long life.”
The LVAD as it is called is normally used in patients with tissue-based hearts and it is not clear what effect it will have on Cheney’s gears and tubes.
“Essentially an LVAD is implanted in patients with severe deterioration of the heart muscle. It pulls blood from the left ventricle and then funnels it into the aorta. It takes over the majority of the functions that a healthy heart would be able to perform and is used as a bridge to and eventual transplant,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “It is not a permanent solution and shouldn’t be seen that way despite many patients doing very well. In Cheney’s case the precise use of the device will likely be altered but for exact details you would have to talk to his surgeon. I have personally never seen and LVAD used in relation to mechanical devices.”
LVAD technology has often been used in the petroleum industry, something Cheney is very familiar with already.
“One also has to wonder what exactly might have gone wrong with his insides that something like welding could not have accomplished, or perhaps the pumping device that they had inside him had simply started to wear down, Either way, it looks like he will be around for a little while longer,” continued Waites. “Hopefully by the time this device starts to fail we will have invented more robust pumping mechanisms. Not the kind they use in places like the gulf perhaps, but something that will allow him to prolong life for a little longer anyway.”
Cheney will also be undergoing a procedure to replace his veins with copper tubing sometime later in the year.
