GUY WHO NAMES THINGS CANNED AFTER ‘ODYSSEY DAWN’ DRAWS RIDICULE
March 23 2011
Washington, D.C. – There are many arguments and many theories about the nature of war. Poets and pundits alike have tried to nail down exactly what war is and why we wage it, all to limited effect. No clear consensus of the nature of war has ever been
established, no clear answers as to why we wage war, why we lust after it, have ever been answered. As it has done for centuries, war goes on well out of the reach of the understanding of those who fight.
As has been the case for much of human history, there is still no shortage of war in the world and there does not seem to be point where that will ever be the case. With dozens of major conflicts occurring throughout the world, incidents that engulf millions of people in conflict, the nature and ubiquity of war is as powerful as ever. The latest of such major incidents is of course the current conflict in Libya, a domestic uprising which has now engaged multiple nations from around the world who seek both war and peace. While still in its early days, the conflict already claimed a number of victims both on the ground in Libya and at home including the guy who names things who has endured a great deal of criticism for the name of the current U.S. mission.
“I will confirm that the guy who names things, who I can’t name, has been let go in recent days. There was been a lot of criticism of the conflict but it is the name itself which has caused a lot of problems and some argue is indicative of the confused nature of the mission itself,” said a military insider who preferred not to be named. “He is a good guy and he has come up with a lot of great names in the past but this one was really bad and unfortunately someone had to take the blame and of course it wasn’t going to be the people that okayed the name but rather the talent behind the scenes.”
The spokesman for the U.S. Africa Command stated that name “has absolutely no meaning”.
“It’s really embarrassing in a lot of ways. The other countries had pretty good names
and then we had this one. Canada called it MOBILE which is kind of pragmatic and sounds like something. France called it Harmattan which is a trade wind that blows across Africa, so that’s cool. The British called theirs Ellamy which doesn’t mean anything but sounds really English. The American name doesn’t really mean anything,” continued the unnamed insider. “A head had to role and the truth is his names in recent years haven’t been that great. Most people never hear the code names and so the brass just let him get away with it for a little while, but this one is so prominent that it just couldn’t be ignored.”
Other countries involved in the operation haven’t named their operations, citing lack of a department to name things.
“There are many challenges in any conflict and unfortunately there are always going to be innocent victims. That is just the nature of war itself and one of the many perils of getting involved in any armed conflict. War brings death and destruction, that’s just what it does,” said Scrape TV International Conflict analyst Mario Martinez. “I think by the time this ends there will be a lot more heads rolling, not just in Libya but also in the United States. Politicians are always going to be eager for a fight especially when they smell blood in the water. Inevitably there will be more scapegoats and more people that will suffer.”
In related news, Libya’s guy who names things was killed by a missile strike while riding a donkey outside of Tripoli.
