OBAMA AND KARZAI JUST CAN’T QUIT EACH OTHER
May 9 2010
Washington, D.C. – Things were never going to be easy in Afghanistan. Alexander the Great knew that, Brezhnev knew that, George Bush knew that, and Barack Obama knew that. Despite centuries of habitation and the rise and fall of multiple empires,
Afghanistan is still a country that human beings have never been able to conquer. The terrain, the lack of natural resources, and a whole host of other challenges have made the country perhaps the formidable land that we have ever sought to defeat, resulting more often than not in it defeating us.
While politics and religion have certainly played their part in the defeat of many potential occupiers, the reason such unrest exists in the first place is a result of the challenges the nation presents to human occupation. The most recent conflict in the country had many hoping that finally the unease that has so permeated the country for so many centuries might finally come to a rest but an ongoing conflict, continuing threats from

the Taliban, and head butting between the two major powers in the country have resulted in seriously diminished hope for the future. At the centre of that conflict are the two leaders, Barack Obama and Hamid Karzai who are meeting in Washington to determine how their relationship can move forward, if indeed there is anything left to salvage.
“Meetings with President Obama and U.S. Cabinet officials will reinforce the long-term and vital partnership between our two countries in areas ranging from security to governance and economic development," said a White house spokesperson. “This is an ongoing process and we must work with our partners in Afghanistan and throughout the region to ensure that all possible efforts are being made to secure the safety and security of the people of that country and our own. While we acknowledge that there have been issues in the past, we are determined to put those things behind us and move forward into a new, brighter future.”
Karzai in particular has been a source of frustration for Obama but it appears that both sides are now willing to acknowledge their roles in the fractured relationship.
“Like it or not the two nations, and thus the two leaders, are tied to one another. While a decade a ago they might have seemed an odd couple, time has a way of changing things. They have spent so much time together and so much effort to make this work that it would be a shame to see them throw all of that away,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “To have come this far, to have gone through all of this and come so close to making things happen seeing it all disintegrating before our eyes is truly a sad thing. There are always going to be problems in any relationship but people need to be able to put aside their differences and more importantly their egos to do what should be done. Hopefully that will happen in Washington.”
Karzai and Obama are expected to meet privately after going for dinner.
“There have been many people who have been predicting the end of this relationship for a long time now, with good reason really, but sometimes the bonds that hold us together are much stronger than the forces pushes us apart and hopefully that will play a big role in this case,” continued Hander. “There are times when things just seem right and you want to see those crazy kids make things work. It doesn’t always happen of course, look at Tom and Nicole or Brad and Jennifer as examples, but that doesn’t mean you can’t keep hoping. Everyone loves a happy ending.”
Karzai will apparently only be spending a few days in Washington before heading home, leaving the two with little time to sort things out.
