OBAMA TO TAKE ON GLOBAL SPREAD OF VEGEMITE

March 10 2011

Washington, D.C. – Whether validly earned or not, Australia has garnered the reputation over the last few decades as a nation of eccentrics, even lunatics, whose view of the world is as opposite as the flow of their toilets. While some of those cork hat
things – kangaroos, shrimp on the Barbie, crocodile dundees, and cork hats – are most certainly media creations, clichés to which the vast majority of Australians have no connection, they are also born out of some truth, just like all such beliefs about any group.

One common cliché however is not based in media myth or exaggeration, the infamous vegemite. Perhaps first popularized in an eccentric 1980’s pop tune, vegemite is as common across the nation down under as people would believe, served in restaurants and supermarkets across the country. The ubiquitous nature of the yeast spread, which also has variants in New Zealand, the U.K., and South Africa, has started to spread across the world, even being touted by the Australian Prime Minister on her trip to the United States. However the acquired taste that is required to truly enjoy vegemite is julia gillard
something that has not spread so rapidly, prompting President Obama to declare, in a rare moment of unity with Republican lawmakers, that vegemite is indeed awful tasting and, essentially, that it has no place in the United States.

“President Obama assured me he had tried Vegemite, he had tried spreading it thinly because that's the classic error that people pile it on. But he said even spreading it on thinly as you're supposed to, he thought it was horrible,” said Australian PM Julia Gillard. “Vegemite is a national delicacy and is wonderfully healthy. I have encouraged the President to try it again and to allow his children to taste our wonderful national dish. I’m sure in no time he will come to love vegemite just as all Australians have done.”

The President reportedly took Gillard’s advisement in good humour but also worked to further nascent efforts to keep vegemite out of the country.vegemite

“To anyone who has tried vegemite it is very clear that this is not a pleasant treat. It is spread on toast and muffins in Australia but unlike here where you usually spread something sweet, vegemite is most certainly not sweet. Whether you pile it on high or spread it thinly, it still tastes all kinds of horrible and isn’t really something that normal people should be eating, which I guess is why it’s so popular in Australia,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Unfortunately Gillard went a little too far forcing it on the President. I know she had been under pressure from vegemite producers in her home country to try and push the product on her trip stateside but that appears to have backfired. Now they are running the risk of losing the entire limited U.S market for good because she pressed too hard too fast.”

Kraft, a U.S. based company, produces vegemite for the Australian market. It has been under increasing pressure to discontinue production for a number of years.vegemite on toast

“Obviously the United States has a lot of things going on, both domestically and internationally, but those issues are often problematic because of political divisions. Not so the case with vegemite which has spread hate and disgust across the corridors of power in the Capitol,” continued Kinsey. “If Obama weren’t so determined himself to get the product out of the country I think it could very well become a major issue in the next election. If he’s unable to get it out, watch for Republicans making it a major part of their platform. This is simply not going to stand in Washington, unless of course they make some campaign contributions.”

Vegemite has been outlawed in Japan and Germany since the early 1990’s.
