OBAMA’S STILL CAN’T GET BILL CLINTON TO LEAVE THE WHITE HOUSE
December 11 2010
Washington, D.C. – What a difference a decade makes. At the end of his Presidency there are few that would have expected that Bill Clinton was going to become one of the most revered statesmen in the history of the United States. A lame duck second
term, scandal after scandal, and a rejection of his term in the election of the son of his one time rival all led many observers to assume that a quiet retirement would have been best.
That of course is not the kind of person Bill Clinton is and his rise in prominence over the last few years is evidence that Bubba isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Like a latter day Jimmy Carter, Clinton has risen from the ashes of his once lost Presidency and become perhaps more important and more beloved than he was in any of his eight years in office. Because of that near universal goodwill it makes perfect sense that the current embattled President would call on Clinton to help ease things along a little bit, exactly what happened on Friday when President Obama invited Clinton to help push through his proposed tax deal. While that has certainly brought a lot of attention, and likely a lot of good will, it has had the
unexpected side effect of overshadowing the current President, so much so that Clinton appears ready to assume his old job again and is currently content to remain in the White House despite repeated hints to move along.
“The President has relied on the advice of Clinton for a long time. Aside from his experience in the job, Clinton is a very smart man with a lot of insight and experience. Now he is using that, and the good will people have for him, to help smooth the conversation,” said a White House insider. “It had the desired effect and though it still remains to be seen whether or not it actually moves along the tax bill, it has certainly earned Obama a great deal of good will.”
Clinton spoke at length to the media, even long after President Obama had left the room.
“The President is very happy to have Clinton’s advice and to have him speak and help
represent the issue first hand. He knows how much power he brings to the table and how he can act as a kind of unifying force for those who are a little sceptical,” continued the insider. “However he isn’t so happy about the President in private. He was invited to stay at the White House overnight but Clinton seems to have gotten used to things. He doesn’t seem to want to leave. He’s started leaving dirty clothes lying around, went to the kitchen in the middle of the night and helped himself, and blared music long into the night. It’s a little uncomfortable but the President just doesn’t know what to do, he can’t just ask him to leave after all.”
Clinton has also apparently been walking around in his boxers in front of the Obama daughters.
“Look, everyone likes Bill but there is something to be said for exiting gracefully. Everyone understands that he has a strong connection with this building and they want to respect that, if for no other reason than to secure his long term support, but this has gotten a little silly already and there are no signs that it’s going to end anytime soon,” continued the insider. “Everyone is hoping that he gets the hint and leaves on his own. I mean he’s a busy guy and has things to do. He can’t conduct all of his business through the White House telephone after all. Eventually he’ll leave, eventually.”
Clinton apparently shows no sign of leaving just yet.
