SHOCK: TALIBAN CRITICIZES U.S. OFFICIALS
January 7 2011
Kabul, Afghanistan – The conversation, the conference, between nations is never an easy thing. Aside from differences of opinion, negotiations between nations are further complicated by things such as cultural differences and language. While those
issues can certainly be overcome, technically, much is often lost in translation. Like all negotiations the conference between two countries rises and falls based on subtleties not on mechanics, something that is often mistaken or misinterpreted at the best of times, and can bring about disastrous consequences when it occurs between two rivals.
Many a tale can be told about a war breaking out because of a supposed insult or a cultural misstep. Though many of those stories are in the past, often a result not so much of increased tolerance but an increased value in keeping the peace, such stories still do occur today. That is apparently exactly what has happened in the world’s most famous conflict, the battle in Afghanistan which has now reached a new flurry of aggression after a statement from North Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham which has stirred up the normally quiet Taliban, which has now come out and openly criticized both Graham and the entire U.S. government for the first time, driving a wedge between the two groups at a critical juncture in the Afghan conflict.
“Such remarks by a well-known official of invading America clearly shows that the war on terrorism has been a drama, produced by Washington. They only carry out raids on people's homes like thieves during the night and martyr innocent Afghans,” said the Taliban in a statement carried in The Taliban Voice of Jihad Online. “The United States wants to loot the nation of Afghanistan for its raw materials and conduct their conspiracies on the people of this country. These statements show the true intent of the Americans in this country and the struggle will go on as long as they seek to occupy Muslim lands.”
Graham suggested that U.S. establish permanent air bases as a berm against aggressive forces in the country. Currently the country has no official plans to establish permanent base in the country.
“In many ways putting bases in Afghanistan would be a very good idea. They would

be an effective way to show the people of the country, both good and bad, that they are there to stay and that they will remain an effective force in the nation for the future. That would give people faith and others deep concerns, which is exactly what you want,” said Scrape TV International analyst Gustav Hander. “Of course Graham has no real power to do anything like that. He is reasonably well respected and has a military background but that doesn’t give him the power to approve military bases of any kind anywhere in the world. Those things are really expensive and require a lot of effort, such things would require a great deal of effort from a lot of people.”
Graham is currently a serving Colonel in the Air Force and participated in both wars in Iraq.
“The Taliban has to be mindful of the fact that Graham is really speaking more to his constituents then he is proposing a real course of action. Politics are relatively non-existent in Afghanistan so it’s understandable that they wouldn’t quite get the minutiae of that kind of activity, and this kind of rambunctious activity could really undo them. Make them look like a bunch of wackos, make them into the bad guys,” continued Hander. “Hopefully the U.S. sees their actions for what they are. There is no reason to completely undo everything that has been done thus far in Afghanistan because of the rabid ravings of a few members of this group. The best thing is to be the bigger person and just let this go. After all, the Taliban has no history of this kind of thing and there’s no reason to assume it will happen again.”
Taliban officials could not be reached for comment. Graham’s office does not have a phone.
