BACHMANN’S CAMPAIGN MANAGER QUITS AFTER SHE NEARLY GIVES HIM A STROKE
September 6 2011
Washington, D.C. – In what may very likely be a deadly, potentially even a fatal, blow against her Presidential hopes the campaign manager for Michele Bachmann has stepped aside, citing health reasons.
68-year old Ed Rollins, who worked on the second Reagan campaign, stepped aside citing the rigours of the campaign and his inability to keep up with the challenges associated with running a national campaign.
“I wish I was 40 years old, but I’m not. I’m 68 years old, I had a stroke a year and a half ago. I’m worn out,” Rollins told Politico. “I want nothing but the best for her, she's a great candidate, I'll continue to be there for her.”
Rollins will stay on as an advisor, but the departure has many concerned that the Bachmann train may be swiftly running out of steam in the wake of the of the Rick Perry express coming into town.
“Ed really believes in Michele but there are limits. If she was the front-runner the job would be easier but that is increasingly not the case. Working from behind is always tough, especially working with her. I mean, yes, that’s what I mean,” said a campaign insider. “She’s tough and there are a lot of things she just doesn’t get. It’s half
running a campaign and half running a political school and that is very tough. If she were a more seasoned candidate things might be different but that just isn’t the case.I know I’ve thought I was having a stroke a few times myself.”
Thus far, the only medical conditions reported by Bachmann campaign workers are a bunch of headaches and an injured knee. The latter happened when an employee bumped his knee on the corner of a desk.
“Sometimes she is great, I mean she is a great person and all, but her political knowledge is limited and that is an issue. When she had popular support a lot of that could be worked over but now we need to just be moving forward without hesitation and we just can’t,” continued the insider. “That’s likely why Ed left. I don’t know any of the details. I’m sure the possibility of a stroke weighed heavily on his mind, but he’s on a lot of medication and watched by doctors so the risk is limited there. All those headaches though, that’s can’t help the constitution. Hopefully he feels better.”
It’s not clear who will replace Rollins, but it will likely be someone younger and healthier.
“This is a bad sign. People may not think much of it but anytime a campaign manager quits there is a good reason. Health reasons are usually not that. He has done this before, usually on the losing side, and so he knew what it would take. Maybe he overestimated his strength or maybe she just broke him down. Whatever the case, it’s not a good sign,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “The bigger problem is that this is going to cause her to stress, which is going to put stress on her employees, which is going to cause more defections and potentially more illness. No one wants to die to see someone else become President, not even Bachmann supporters. This is probably the beginning of the end for her.”
At least three other staffers have left in the last week, mostly for indigestion related issues.
