COCA-COLA PARTY TAKING STEAM OUT OF POTENTIAL TEA PARTY CANDIDATES
March 26 2011
Atlanta, GA – The introduction of new parties into the American political system is not an easy thing. As closed a system as has ever been had in politics, creating a third tier, a party outside the traditional Democrat-Republican dynamic is something
almost foreign. It has been done successfully before, with people like Ralph Nader, Ross Perot, and even Theodore Roosevelt managing to gain traction outside the traditional tow parties, but none of those people every became President through those parties, and most assume that is going to be the case forever.
Still, new political entities seem to pop up every now and then, the most prominent of which has been, at least recently, the Tea Party. Few would debate the growing influence of that party, rooted in a kind of arch conservatism, but equally few would measure its political power in terms of chances at fielding a serious Presidential contender. The trouble facing the party in that respect is very much the same as the trouble which has faced all third parties, something not even Sarah Palin will likely be able to change. Now though the party is facing even more challenges than history in face of a new party named after a much more popular caffeinated beverage that is starting to take some steam out of the Tea Party.
“The obvious reaction is that we are trying to play off the Tea party but that couldn’t be further from the truth. We are trying to engage the public on a level they understand and we don’t think that the majority of Americans understand tea. They do however understand soft drinks and that is what we are counting on,” said David Wilkins, Chairperson of the party. “This is truly a party of the people, a party with which people can connect rather than a party which embraces some distant historical lesson, or the national drink of a foreign country. Coca-Cola is truly an American creation, of America and for America.”
Officially the Coca-Cola company is not involved with the party, though it has taken no action to limit its use of their brand.
“To use the national drink of the nation from which we fought for freedom is indicative
of the real intentions of the Tea Party. While they espouse a connection to the common American, they sip their tea with their pinkies in the air, snacking on crumpets and discussing the future of the country,” continued Wilkins. “Our party does nothing of the kind. This is a party made up of Americans for Americans. This isn’t about branding or promoting a product, it’s about engaging a common experience for all Americans rather than some foreign ideal. The Coca-Cola party is truly in tune with the American people, not some fantastic ideal of a long past beverage.”
Wilkins describes the party as centre-right, with just a taste of liberal social values.
“It is very unlikely that any third, or fourth, or fifth party is ever going to be able to gain serious traction in the American political system. Functionally the system is certainly set up to utilize such a happening, but as we have seen in the past no candidates from those parties are able to reach critical mass and simply end up taking votes from other parties,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Whether or not that will happen here is something we will have to wait and see about, but I think that no third parties will ever be able to gain real traction no matter what type of beverage they are named after, even the Beer Party which really hasn’t had much of an impact.”
The Mountain Dew and Doritos Party is deemed unlikely to field a candidate for the 2012 Presidential election after failing to secure any seats in the 2010 elections.
