ERIC HOLDER PROUD THAT FAST AND FURIOUS WEAPONS WILL BE USED FOR YEARS TO COME
December 8 2011
Washington, D.C. – There are good ideas, and then there are ideas that seemed good when you were talking about them. For many people the Fast and Furious gunrunning operation was likely the latter, especially given all the fuss that has erupted around the deal. At the very least Attorney General Eric Holder has to be thinking that perhaps given another chance, that he would have done it a different way.
It is, after all, Holder who has become the principle target for the issue. While unlikely that he directly approved the mission, it still happened under his watch and ultimately, that is going to make him responsible.
Holder though has tried to wiggle his way out of taking the blame, instead trying to drop it on subordinates and, in a strange twist, insinuated that it really isn’t all that bad and that the country should take some pride in the fact that Mexican gangs will be using weapons made in the good old USA for years to come.
“Although the department has taken steps to ensure that such tactics are never used again, it is an unfortunate reality that we will continue to feel the effects of this flawed operation for years to come. Guns lost during this operation will continue to show up at crime scenes on both sides of the border,” said Holder, testifying on Capitol Hill.
Approximately 600 of the 2000 weapons distributed in the failed sting campaign have been recovered, aside from the ones found at new crime scenes.
It’s not clear if the use of the weapons has increased gun sales stateside, but the long term quality of the guns is still to be fully determined.
“I’m sure these weapons will eventually make their way across Mexico and throughout the southern states in great abandon and that could mean great things for American weapons manufacturers. So long as people know they are using American guns, so long as they see the quality, that hopefully is all they will want to use going forward. That’s a good boost for those companies,” said Scrape TV Business analyst Ken Green. “Obviously that was not the intent behind this program but you make lemonade out of lemons. A few extra gun sales won’t turn around the economy, but it sure won’t hurt.”
Unlike the situation with the Fast and Furious weapons, future purchases likely won’t see a bulk discount.
“Look, the guns are out there and you just have to deal with that. Rather than getting all worked up and worried about things, try to make the best of a bad situation. I think, possibly, people will be thanking Holder and his people in the long run once those gun sales pick up,” continued Green. “Not everyone will benefit from it of course, but enough will to make it worthwhile. Hopefully Holder doesn’t get treated too harshly considering that.”
Holder has reportedly also said that he`s happy that the lost weapons aren`t going to waste.
