IOWA WILL IGNORE ALL VOTES CAST FOR RON PAUL IN PRIMARY ELECTION
December 20 2011
Sioux City, Iowa – The election season is nigh, and in the first race it appears that Ron Paul, the unlikeliest of candidates, might be a winner.
That first election, January 3rd in Iowa, will mark the official start of the primary season that will eventually lead to a candidate for President. As is the case in all such elections, significant players have come and gone and now only a few viable candidates remain. Once an election or two passes, there will be even fewer candidates until eventually there is only one left.
The story begins in Iowa and it starts in a most unexpected way. While Ron Paul has certainly been a darling for a niche group of conservatives, his appeal has always remained limited. Yet only two weeks from election time, he appears to be primed for an election victory in the first important vote of the season. That is, of course, provided the Republican caucus allows votes for him to be counted at all, something they are threatening to not allow.
“It would make the caucuses mostly irrelevant if not entirely irrelevant. It would have a very damaging effect because I don’t think he could be elected president and both Iowa and national Republicans wouldn’t think he represents the will of voters,” Becky Beach, a long-time Republican told Politico.
Indeed, that sentiment has been fairly pervasive across the state and across the party, a reality that many feel could devalue Iowa as a player in the primary game in the future.
Paul has gained a wide level of support, particularly as a spoiler, from Independents and Democrats leading up to the primary, which may prompt Republicans in that state to just throw out all votes marked for Paul.
“Look, this is gimmick. Ron Paul does not have a chance at winning the general election and everyone knows that. He is a disruptive force, a trouble maker, and he is going to create a lot of problems for people who actually want to run for President and who have a real chance,” said one insider with the Republican Party. “That is why we need to take action. Some of the votes for him will be genuine and we are trying to train our vote counters on how to distinguish those from the trouble making votes. Basically all we need to do is diminish his count and allow real candidates to have a chance at winning. We think we can effectively do that by throwing out ballots.”
It’s not clear how many votes Iowa will have to dispose of, nor if it’s entirely legal to do so, but it appears nothing will stop them.
“We want the best candidate to win and if the people don’t well, then we will be forced to do something about that. We are not going to be subject to the will of the people if they are going to do something silly like vote for Ron Paul. They need to vote for a good candidate and if they aren’t going to, we will handle it for them,” continued the insider. “These elections are not a joke and we won’t allow them to be made into one. This is about the future of our country and we aren’t going to simply allow people to throw it away.”
Ron Paul has objected to the destruction of ballots, but Iowa doesn’t really care.
