MICHELE BACHMAN PROMISES TO RESTORE SLAVERY-ERA FAMILY VALUES
July 12 2011
Washington, D.C. – There were some who believed that the election of Barack Obama was symbolic of the end of a horrible national nightmare. There are few today who would argue that slavery was a good thing, no matter how much of a benefit it
provided to the descendants of slaves and the country as a whole. For most people slavery is a blight on the history of the country, a stain on the otherwise grand experiment that has been the United States. It is something people would rather forget, but something that will never go away, no matter who becomes President.
Because of that complicated history, slavery is something most people would just rather forget. The hope that Obama’s election would end the concern was principally a hope that the guilt of those days, still very much a burden to the descendents of slave owners, would simply be wiped away, that in many ways, his election would redeem the entire nation. That was never going to happen though because it simply could not. Slavery is something that is embedded in the history of America and no amount of redemption will ever change that fact. Some people are perfectly fine with that including Presidential hopeful Michele Bachman who recently signed a pledge to restore traditional American values and return the country back to the slavery-era family dynamic.
“Slavery had a disastrous impact on African-American families, yet sadly a child born into slavery in 1860 was more likely to be raised by his mother and father in a two-parent household than was an African-American baby born after the election of the USA's first African-American President,” reads the pledge, in part, which Bachmann signed.
Later, the controversial wording was changed, “After careful deliberation and wise insight and input from valued colleagues we deeply respect, we agree that the statement referencing children born into slavery can be misconstrued,” said Bob Vander Plaats, head of the group which endorsed the pledge.
“Slavery was a hard time for everyone, but mostly for the slaves. Aside from the forced labour, which is bad enough, families were regularly broken up, women were raped, and children were taken away for their own version of forced labour and sexual abuse. The truth is that slavery was actually a pretty rough time for most families, particularly African American families,” said Scrape TV Racism analyst Drake Douglas. “It’s easy to look back on the old days and think that they were great, that they were a special kind of time that is long gone now but the truth is a little far from that. Generally speaking, people see those times in movies and not in reality and that causes them to see it in a slightly obscured way. Of course most people don’t look all that fondly upon the slavery days, but I guess everyone has their own passions.”
Representatives for Bachmann reportedly asked that the slavery portion of the pledge be removed after she received criticism.
“I think it’s very unlikely that even Michele Bachman, if she were to win the Presidency, would be able to bring back slavery. Frankly, even is family values were better back then I don’t think it would serve the public interest to bring back the whole kit and caboodle. That would probably not go over very well,” continued Douglas. “Frankly, I don’t think that many people would accept it. You might be able to win over the regular people, the poorer people, but I seriously doubt that wealthy black people would be willing to give up everything they have. I think it’s possible you would cause some social issues, ones that would ultimately outweigh the gains of better family values.”
Most black people Bachmann has spoken with are reportedly in favour of a return to traditional slavery values.
