NANCY PELOSI AND EVERYONE ELSE WANTS HER TO RETIRE
December 29 2011
Washington, D.C. – Nancy Pelosi will undoubtedly go down in history as one of the more important footnotes. She was for a short time the most powerful woman in American politics, the first to lead a major party in the House and the first female Speaker. Whatever her failings or her pratfalls, that legacy is something that can never be taken from her.
Politics, though, changes with the winds. Pelosi is no longer the Speaker and multiple gaffes, as well as head-butting with the President and other Democratic powers, have certainly taken their toll on Pelosi’s public image, reducing her to little more than the butt of jokes, both good and bad, potentially tarnishing her reputation forever.
Now it appears that Pelosi may be looking to do what she to salvage her reputation, getting out while things are still relatively okay, at least according to her daughter Alexandra who revealed that her mother is looking to retire, something that will likely suit her and just about everyone else on the Beltway just fine.
“She would retire right now, if the donors she has didn’t want her to stay so badly. They know she wants to leave, though. They think she’s destined for the wilderness. She has very few days left. She’s 71, she wants to have a life, she’s done. It’s obligation, that’s all I’m saying,” the younger Pelosi told BigGovernment.
It’s not clear how many of those donors may just be continuing to support Pelosi out of obligation.
It’s also not clear what Pelosi will do if she does leave politics, or if anyone is really all that interested in what she might do after she leaves politics.
“For a while it appeared that Pelosi’s reputation was solid. Now, though, she is on the outs and she has no real power, and the Democrats are struggling both in the House and with the President. If she stays she will be in for a fight, struggle for a long time and she didn’t get into politics for the fight, she got into it for the donors and those two things are now in conflict,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “I mean when things are good they are usually a whole lot easier. Money roles in, people like you, and bills get passed but things are going to get rough very shortly here and that is going to make the whole process more like work than fun and that is going to scare off some people, especially the older ones.”
Long-time Representative Barney Frank has already announced his retirement from House. It’s not clear if his donors still actually supported him anymore.
“Pelosi has really, because of the decline in her reputation, become almost a liability for the Party as a whole. Life will certainly be hard without all those donors around, no doubt about that, but she has to think about all the good politics has done her and make the sacrifice,” continued Kinsey. “I think it would be a good time for her to retire that is a sentiment shared by many people in Washington. Heck, a few might even wish she could go back in time and retire years ago, but I doubt that even the most generous of donors would be able to support the development of a time machine to do that. Best that she just move forward instead of moving back.”
Pelosi has apparently started asking around to see what her peers think of a possible retirement, and apparently been surprised by the enthusiasm.
