OBAMA DITCHES CELEBRITIES; HOLLYWOOD GOES REPUBLICAN
October 25 2011
Hollywood, CA – Back in 2008 much was made of Barack Obama’s public courting of celebrities. While campaigning with the rich and famous was nothing new in American politics, the degree to which Obama engaged Hollywood was on another level. Entranced as the nation was by the young upstart Senator, celebrities naturally flocked to his side and Obama was glad to accept them.
That became, eventually, a focal point for opponents, namely John McCain who tried to use the connections as evidence of Obama’s disassociation with ordinary people. That tactic gained little ground, but it appears that Obama did see it as a potential problem, leading to him essentially shunning Hollywood this time around.
There have been no high profile celebrities at the White House, no big names appearing at campaign stumps and Obama has even gone out of his way to criticize some celebrities including the Kardashians and the cast of ‘Jersey Shore’. While that may seem like smart campaigning, removing a potential weapon, it has apparently caused a lot of sore feelings in Hollywood with many in the notoriously liberal town already switching sides and many more considering a vote for whatever Republican candidate runs against the President.
“It’s nothing like I’ve ever seen before. I saw one of the most liberal studio execs I’ve ever seen suddenly switch sides. He actually came in on casual day with a shirt saying ‘Anyone but Obama’ which I never thought could happen in Hollywood. It was so
stunning, really, amazing in so many ways,” said a Hollywood insider. “The word has also started to go out that anyone supporting Obama will actually be blacklisted from future productions but apparently it hasn’t been an issue because no one is really supporting him in town.”
Most ordinary Americans aren’t supporting Obama either. It’s not clear if that is related at all.
“I actually saw a big name celebrity, a big Democrat, like someone who has been on the campaign trail for years, wearing a Mitt Romney button. They have not taken very kindly to Obama’s rejection of them this time around and some will do whatever they can to make sure that he isn’t elected next year,” continued the insider. “You just don’t do this and Obama should know better. When you reject stars they will turn against you, and this time around he needs all the votes he can get. It isn’t just public either, he isn’t taking their calls and that has really irritated a lot of people. I think this time around Hollywood, maybe all of California, will go red.”
Other active supporters including power hitters such as Steven Spielberg and David Geffen have apparently donated cash to Republican candidates.
“Hollywood is a razor edge for Politicians. It’s really a tough line to walk for a lot of reasons and Obama probably stepped over it last time, potentially alienating himself from ordinary people. It didn’t hurt his campaign but it could this time,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Now he has gone the opposite direction and that could cause even more problems. Hollywood people do not take kindly to rejection, at least not important ones, and that could put Obama in doghouse for a long time to come, perhaps forever and that could turn the tide of the election.”
Prominent Democrat Barbra Streisand will reportedly vote for Obama but is not risking not working because, well, she doesn’t work much anyways.
