REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES CHECKING INTO FOURSQUARE AFTER OBAMA JOINS
August 17 2011
Washington, D.C. – There is little doubt that Barack Obama’s deft use of the internet and social media helped propel him to victory in 2008. The ground roots campaign that pushed him to victory was started and facilitated by the web and used in such an effective way that it left competitors in the dust. Now, as another election looms, so too does the power of social media.
The web has of course evolved in the last three years and so too have politicians. This time around, Obama will simply not have the advantages he did the last time. All candidates will be pumping money into social campaigns and their audiences will no doubt be much more receptive than the last time around. Because of that, Obama and other front runners are looking for any advantage they can get and that includes all new versions of social networking, including the relatively new Foursquare which allows users to ‘check-in’ to locations wherever they might be. Already, though, Republican candidates have started to criticize the President for using the service, while they start to use it themselves.
“It is irresponsible for the President to be detailing his every move to public. His is a position that requires security and by doing this he is opening up the office itself to
threats,” said one Republican insider. “The President needs to understand that the American people don’t care about where is at any given moment unless he is in Washington trying to deal with the jobs issue. They don’t care that he is at a local ice cream parlour or soda shop. This doesn’t interest the American public.”
Obama is the first and most prominent leader, past or present, of the Free World to use the service.
“The President needs to stop relying so much on technology and get down to brass taxes. He needs to get in touch with the people and not be playing in these digital realms that most voters either don’t understand or don’t care about understanding,” continued the insider. “People care about jobs, they care about war, they don’t care about these things and they never will. This is why Obama has lost the American people, because he spends too much time trying to be something they are not.”
Coincidentally, Obama’s first use of the service came in Iowa, a major swing state in all elections.
“This is an extension of the President’s efforts to engage the American people on a personal level. By using this service the President will be able to let ordinary people

know where is at all times, he will be able to show them the efforts he makes to see every single one of them. It’s a kind of personal touch,” said a White House spokesperson. “The use of Foursquare should not be a divisive political issue. Already we have seen a number of Republican candidates jumping on board by hiring young people to update their location. This is a core part of the new American experience and should not be used for cheap political gains. The people of the United States deserve better than such pettiness and the President seeks to give them exactly that opportunity.”
Thus far the only Republican candidate who has publicly used the service is Ron Paul who has no followers.
