RICK PERRY STILL ACTUALLY CAMPAIGNING IN IOWA AND ELSEWHERE
December 31 2011
Des Moines, IA – This year’s Republican campaign has certainly been an exciting one. True, there have been only small scandals but the rollercoaster nature of the polling has made for one exciting ride, creating expectations and destroying hopes almost weekly.
While there are certainly a lot of reasons for such ups and downs, the biggest one is really the person who is most likely going to get the nomination, Mitt Romney. Voters, simply put, want someone other than Romney but with a week field of candidates, have found themselves with really no other option. They’ve tried everyone else, and found no one who fits.
One of the people the voters tried for a while is Rick Perry who had perhaps the quickest rise and fall. Only a few weeks ago Perry was the frontrunner, commanding most of the attention and trouncing Romney in the polls. Now, not so much. In fact Perry isn’t really in the conversation anymore, though contrary to what most people seemed to believe, he is actually still in the race and may still get a handful of votes come election day.
“There has never been a more ineptly orchestrated, just unbelievably subpar campaign for president of the United States than this one,” said a Perry advisor who was actually a part of running that campaign, straight into the ground it seems.
It’s not clear if that advisor was directed to run a totally ineffective and buffoonish campaign, and if he was, why exactly that would be seen as an advantage.
Perry has suffered major defeats during debates, almost every time he spoke actually, and that has caused supporters to pull financial backing, seemingly dooming the campaign for good, though Perry has vowed to stay in the race.
“Rick believes that he could surprise a lot of people next Tuesday, not least of which would be himself. We realize that thing have not gone great the last few weeks but this is the final stretch and this is where we do well, or at least this is where we hope we do well. We’ve actually never been in this situation before,” said another Perry advisor. “We hope people will turn out the vote for Rick, we just need to make sure that all his backers realize he is still in the race. That has been the most difficult aspect of this campaign at this level, making sure people know he is actually still on the ballot. We don’t want people to be surprised when they go to vote.”
An early run of the ballots did exclude Perry’s name. Those were tossed and Perry was placed just above other and Jon Hunstman, in that order.
“It’s been really hard the last few weeks. All these other candidates have risen and fallen and that has distracted voters from remembering that our candidate is actually still in the race. There have been so many that it’s really tough to keep people on target, to make sure they realize he is still around,” continued the insider. “We hope that a last minute burst will keep him on their minds, or at the very least that they will read the whole ballot before marking their vote. That would really help a lot at this stage.”
Surveys have shown that most voters only read the top three names on ballots, and Perry isn’t even close to that.
