ROD BLAGOJEVICH READY TO SELL HIS SEAT IN PRISON TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER
December 7 2011
Chicago, IL - Politicians do dumb things. Not all the time, not even most of the time, but when they do them and they get caught, it’s usually the end. Life as a politician is not an easy one and things that would barely even be noticed in regular life, say smoking weed, is amplified when a person is in politics. None of those sins are unique or even inventive, but you still can’t afford to have them when you are in the public eye.
And then there are the cases of people like Rod Blagojevich who exploit their position for even greater personal gain. Already having achieved more than most people could ever dream of achieving, Blago wanted more and likely felt that in his position, he could have anything he wanted. That arrogance ended up getting him something he most certainly did not want, 14 years in prison.
That is the sentence handed down to the disgraced former Illinois Governor after being convicted on 17 charges of corruption after trying to sell Barack Obama’s absent senate seat. For the first time, though, Blagojevich seemed to understand his crimes and was even remorseful about his actions, though is apparently holding out hope that he will be able to sell his own seat in prison to the highest bidder.
“I accept the people’s verdict, judge. They found me guilty and all I can say is I never wanted to hurt anyone … I would hope you can find some mercy,” said Blagojevich before his sentence was passed.
Prosecutors had been looking for a harsher sentence, while the defence had hoped for as little as probation. Either way, Blagojevich apparently feels that he won’t be spending all that much time in prison.
“Rod’s circles are certainly much smaller than they used to be but he still has some friends, some powerful and wealthy friends and he feels that that will give him and advantage in trying to move this seat, err, cell. After all, it will have been held by a former Governor,” said an insider. “Right now he’s just putting out feelers. He knows he’s going to have to spend a little time in the cell just to make it worth putting up, but he feels that it won’t be long at all before there are offers and this time, well let’s just say that he learned a lot from the last time.”
It’s not clear if Blagojevich will accept payments in cigarettes or just in protection from all the rape in prison.
“This has been a hard lesson for him and he has learned a lot. He has learned that it’s not a good idea to lie to FBI, that it’s not a good idea to irritate a judge, and that it is never, never a good idea to offer senate seats on Craigslist. I can tell you that mistake is one that he certainly won’t be making again,” continued the insider. “The heat will be on him for a little while, he realize that, but once it dies down he’s sure that buyers will be lining up just to get a chance at his prison seat. Once that happens, well he wants to take it one thing at a time. Let’s just say that if any new senate seats pop up he will likely be interested, and he’ll have more than enough cash to make it happen.”
Blagojevich also tried to sell one of his many toilet seats online during the trial, which raised the ire of the judge and may have caused the aggressive sentence.
