WHITE HOUSE CONSIDERING FIRST STRIKE NUCLEAR OPTION AGAINST HURRICANES
August 29 2011
Washington, D.C. – By the time Hurricane Irene was finished it was clear that the hype was much bigger than the storm itself. Many could have predicted that, but considering how devastating hurricanes can be, being a little over-prepared probably doesn’t hurt.
That’s not to say that Irene wasn’t damaging, it did kill eleven people and cause billions of dollars in damage, but it was only a miniscule effect considering the hype. Still, the storm did cause a lot of fear and concern that should a future storm not be so tame, that the effects might be devastating, which has prompted politicians to come up with a new plan.
That new plan involves possibly stopping the storm before it is even able to come near land, stopping it dead in its tracks before it can hurt anyone. To that end, the White House is apparently seeking congressional approval for a first strike nuclear option when it comes with possible hurricanes threatening the United States.
“It’s a radical solution and would require a shift in thinking amongst politicians, but the threat against New York really drove it home. The concern is that a much more powerful storm could eventually hit a major urban centre like New York or D.C. and
cause serious damage and that means we need an option to prevent such a thing
from happening,” said a White House insider. “The concern is that a Katrina level storm could hit a major city, even Miami, and cause irreparable harm and so they want to take action against that.”
The first strike option would put the decision whether or not to nuke a potential storm strictly in the hands of the President.
“It’s really about stopping these things before they start. One option might even be to hit tropical storms before they form into hurricanes, thereby preventing any threat to the United States at all,” continued the spokesperson. “It has become clear that these storms have no interest in stopping, and some experts are concerned that they could even increase going forward, and that makes the need for action all the more important. There are risks of course, there always are when dealing with nuclear weapons, but the risk of not doing anything could be much greater.”
Among the risks is the possibility that a nuke would do nothing and simply spread radiation over a much wider area as the storm progresses.
“The theory is sound, that the shockwave from the storm would dissipate the power
of the storm but there is no clear modeling on that. Hurricane forces are extremely powerful and may well be more powerful than anything we are able to create. Of course you could use more nukes, but the more you use the greater the risk,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “The big risk is that fallout would be spread over a wide area, and the more nukes you use the more fallout you get. The other big risk is that if the U.S. decided they can do this then there is nothing stopping other countries from doing the same thing, and using nukes to change the weather is something we should probably try to stay away from as a rule.”
Russia has long held the option to nuke winter snow storms, though has not yet done so.
