GABRIELLE GIFFORDS ANNOUNCES RESIGNATION TO SPEND MORE TIME, UH, SOMETHING
January 23 2012
Washington, D.C. – The only thing more remarkable than the shooting of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords has been her recovery. When word started to spread that Giffords had been wounded in that vicious shooting a little more than a year ago, most people assumed the worst, and barring that, something nearly as bad. Giffords, though defied all expectations and has not only survived but thrived in the face of her injury.
Not only did she make a comeback, Giffords actually returned to work only a few months after the attack, showing her incredible recovery, her incredible spirit, and the incredible capacity for the human body to mend itself. Giffords, though, did suffer a major trauma to her brain and that organ unlike any other in the human body has twists and turns that no one can predict.
Now, it seems, those twists and turns have gone in a direction that will no longer allow Giffords to continue working her often stressful job, as evidenced by her announcement to retire and spend more time on recovery and, uh, other things she couldn’t remember.
“I don't remember much from that horrible day, but I will never forget the trust you placed in me to be your voice. I'm getting better. Every day my spirit is high. I have more work to do on my recovery. So to do what's best for Arizona, I will step down this week,” Giffords said in a video posted on her Facebook page.
Giffords has not been seen at the Congressional chamber in a number of weeks, the last she reportedly went on and on about fellow Arizona representative Harry Mitchell stealing her sandwiches.
Giffords had to be removed from the chamber when she apparently became violent in trying to recover her sandwiches. There is no evidence that Mitchell stole anything from Giffords.
“It’s both great and sad that Gifford has decided to move on but the reality of harsh brain trauma is that it takes a serious toll well beyond the obvious. Patients with these types of traumas suffer a host of other medical problems that make it very difficult to live life as they did before. Often they never return completely no matter how much progress they make,” said Scrape TV Health analyst Rebecca Phelps. “Giffords is likely suffering a great deal of fatigue, probably exacerbated by multiple medications she needs to be on. That alone can make any full time job difficult and cause other issues such as mental lapses, which is really not something you want in a person making important decisions.”
A number of other members of the House gave glowing praise to Giffords’ strength and courage, presumably glossing over the whole sandwich thing and other such incidents.
“Presumably, with her career and with her husbands, she will be taken care of financially and that will allow her to just focus on getting better. She will get better to some degree but a lot of it at this stage is really just maintenance. That’s the goal with people who suffer major head traumas, trying to prevent a slideback,” continued Phelps. “They all reach a stage where things don’t continue to improve but just are the way they are. I wouldn’t be surprised if that is the situation for Giffords now. I’m sure she will enjoy trying to read and putting together puzzles, they tend to like that kind of thing.”
Giffords took a nap shortly after the announcement and then made herself a sandwich which she left on the kitchen counter.
