HARRY BELAFONTE CRITICIZES OBAMA AND SAYS HE WILL HAVE HIS DAY-O
January 11 2012
Los Angeles, CA – Celebrities, for the most part, don’t really matter in politics. Sometimes they have real value and sometimes politicians themselves are celebrities, but for the most part the political opinions and affiliations of celebrities are meaningless to everyone but themselves. People may love Matt Damon onscreen, for example, but that doesn’t mean they want to vote the same way as he does.
Nonetheless, celebrities continue to come out with their views on politics and people keep asking, assuming for some reason that the general public really does care. That is exactly what one radio show, ‘Smiley & West’ did on Wednesday when they invited Calypso legend Harry Belafonte on the show, and they didn’t get what they expected.
Belafonte, a noted Liberal, lambasted President Obama on the show, shocking both listeners and the hosts, though not with the fact that Belafonte was still alive and lucid, but that he would so publicly condemn a Democratic President.
“I’m very cautious of the fact that those who think he has some second agenda and only if he could be given a second term for us to see the new light, new things will be revealed, new efforts will be made to take us to a place other than where we’ve been and where we languish. I just don’t trust that. I don’t believe that’s a safe way and accurate way to look at this scenario,” said Belafonte. “If there was the kind of moral compass serving Barack Obama the way we hoped, the moral force would have helped him make choices, the absence of that force in his equations, that barometer to guide him when he has to make these decisions that are hugely complicated, he should have come to the table with the things that would have helped us in this moment of crisis.”
After the tirade, Belafonte acquiesced and sang his famous line from the ‘Banana Boat Song’, though added that he thought Obama would have his Day-O soon.
Belafonte was escorted from the studio by his nurses and given his iPod and headphones to allow him to revisit his heyday.
“The biggest issue I think with this particular criticism isn’t so much the criticism itself, or that fact that it is coming from a Liberal, but the fact that it is coming from a black person, a famous one. That, rightly or wrongly, has been a big part of this Presidency and it cannot be removed from the equation,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “Harry Belafonte is one of those people who helped pave the way for Barack Obama to be President and so as a black man he has to be disappointed. I’m sure he, like every other black person, saw Obama as a kind of saviour, a vindication, but he turned out to be a politician and that has to be a disappointment.”
Both Belafonte and Obama are indeed black.
“For someone like Belafonte it has to almost be like being disappointed by a son. That’s of course crazy, they aren’t related, but he surely believes that he has some real investment in Obama’s success as a politician and Obama’s mediocrity has to sting,” continued Kinsey. “I’m sure if a commie atheist left winger like Belafonte actually celebrated Christmas the Obama’s would be off his list. As things are though he just has to go on TV and radio and criticize him. Of course singing Day-O is probably more important to his ability to get notice than his political views, why wouldn’t it be. Everyone loves that song.”
Obama did not respond to Belafonte, apparently too busy being the most powerful man in the world.
