MITT ROMNEY TRYING TO BUY ELECTION VICTORY THAT WAS ALREADY IN HIS GRASP
January 16 2012
Sutter, SC – Richard Nixon lied about Watergate, Spiro Agnew cheated on his taxes, Dan Quayle couldn’t spell potato, Bill Clinton lied about that woman. Mistakes by politicians are both big and large, running the gamut from small embarrassing incidents to huge errors that doom leadership and no politician is immune. Whether it is Hitler attacking Russia or Julius Caesar trusting Brutus, politicians make mistakes, sometimes even when they don’t have to do anything.
That may well be the case for Mitt Romney who has been for months the spot-on favourite to win the Republican nomination for President and now, with two successive victories in Iowa and New Hampshire it appears that those prediction are starting to come true, but now Romney may have slipped by slipping a little cash into a voter’s pocket.
During a stop in South Carolina ahead of that state’s Primary on Saturday, Romney ran into 55-year old Ruth Williams who told him her tale of woe and unemployment, to which Romney responded by handing her a fistful of cash and sending her on her way, effectively buying her vote and possibly ending his chances at becoming President for a scandal he never needed to create.
“I was on the highway praying and said, ‘God just show me how to get [my] lights on,’ and I pulled up to a stop sign and his bus was there. And then God said, ‘Follow the bus,’ and I followed the bus to the airport,” said Williams after meeting up with Romney on the campaign trail. “God didn’t tell me to go to nobody else, he told me to pray for Romney. I listened to the Lord.”
According to his campaign, Romney gave Williams fifty or sixty dollars which, alongside the word of the Almighty, essentially bought her vote.
Romney has been the favourite to win the South Carolina Primary which would in effect win him the nomination. It’s not clear how many votes Romney has already purchased.
“This is really a bonehead move and one that, frankly, is totally unnecessary. Romney was on his way to a win, he is on his way to a win, and he did not need to buy any votes. I mean he could not possibly buy enough votes to put him over the top and so buying this woman’s loyalty was unnecessary, but he went and did it anyway. Bonehead,” said Scrape TV Political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “This is the problem with Romney. He comes two steps forward and takes three back. He could have ridden this wave and won the nomination cleanly but he just wanted that one extra vote and now that may undo his whole presidency campaign.”
It’s not clear how many other votes Romney has purchased thus far. His net worth is somewhere in the $250 million range, meaning that he has enough loose cash to buy a lot of votes.
“Generally the President, whomever wins, gets about 50 million votes. That means Romney can easily afford 5 dollars for every vote. Subtracting the people who would vote Republican anyway and he will still end up with a small sum for himself. He can’t keep going around giving out fifty dollar bills, but in this economy a fiver should do it,” continued Kinsey. “That said, buying votes is at the very least in contravention of the spirit of the law. I’m sure it more than violates a few actual laws as well and that could end his campaign and when it was already in his hands. That’s Romney I guess, maybe it’s for the best.”
Williams also convinced Romney supporter Curtis Loftis, who is the Treasurer for South Carolina, to pay her $150 electricity bill, showing that this woman either has some strange voodoo or something more scandalous than a fifty dollar bribe.
