BARACK OBAMA FALLS ASLEEP AT RALLY

Fayetteville, NC – While Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama has been applauded for his cool demeanour and calm under pressure, that seemingly laid back attitude almost got the Illinois Senator in trouble at a South Carolina rally on Sunday where Obama momentarily fell asleep while speaking.

“It was just a moment where he closed his eyes for a little too long and stopped moving and you realized that he had actually dozed off,” said Maria Bentos, a democratic supporter who was in the crowd. “It was a very strange thing to see a person just doze off in the middle of talking but there it was. He recovered quickly and the speech was great, just a funny thing.”

Aides for the Obama campaign denied that the candidate had dozed off, saying that he occasionally will pause in the middle of speaking to collect his thoughts and that was all that had happened. Observers from within the crowd and, in particular Republican watchers and rivals, had a slightly different view of the incident.

“Is this the kind of man you want with his finger in the button? What if in one of his unconditional talks with Ahmadinejead and dozes off? What if there’s God forbid another 9/11 style attack and he falls asleep? That’s not the kind of man we want as President,” said Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin. “A President McCain would schedule his naps so that he is always well rested and ready to deal with the problems of the country. He would not be dozing off in the middle of doing things, but obviously our opponent would.”

One insider we spoke to did acknowledge that the Senator did briefly doze off, but that it had been an anomaly, stating that Obama was fanatic about getting a proper night’s rest.

“It looks bad that’s for sure, but it’s probably nothing to be overly worried about,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “The toll of a two year campaign, being the father of two young children, and being a senator, that’s bound to wear anybody down. As for McCain, it’s likely he got a lot of practice in sleep deprivation during his time as a Prisoner of War. I think it would be irrational to think that this incident is a comment on Obama’s ability to be President and lead the country. It’s a one off.”

With precious little else to hammer home on the Democrats, and with the campaigns coming to a very quick end, the McCain campaign is expected to hit this latest incident hard with a series of television commercials and print ads showing the dozing Obama and emphasizing his unfitness to lead.  

“These are exactly the kinds of slip ups you can’t afford at this point in the campaign because it gives the opponent an in, whether it is legitimate or not,” continued Kinsey. “The Obama campaign has to watch out for these kinds of things. They almost have this deal sewn up and they can’t risk losing to something silly like this.”

One party that has also jumped on the snooze bandwagon is No Doz, a brand of caffeine pills, who have already announced plans to integrate the slumbering Obama into a new ad campaign.

“I can’t think of a better opportunity for our company. There is no better spokesperson for our product than the possible future President of the country,” said a spokesperson for the company. “We’re going to get right on the advertising side of it, and we’ll make sure we send a lifetime supply to 1600 if Obama is elected.”  

Obama’s campaign continued today after a good night’s rest.
