NEWS >POLITICS > JOHN MCCAIN TO SPEAK IN BERLIN, NEW HAMPSHIRE

Washington, D.C. – With Barack Obama’s trip abroad making headlines, rival John McCain has decided to respond in kind. Obama is due to speak in the historic German capital of Berlin later this week, and in an effort to swipe at the attention he is receiving, McCain is planning to speak in small town Berlin, New Hampshire to outline his plans for America.
“While Senator Obama is out trying to impress the world and grab headlines, I have chosen to speak in front of the American people, outside the glitz and glamour of the headlines, to speak directly to the American people in America. Senator Obama is showing his true colors by travelling the world at taxpayers’ expense, and I am showing mine by speaking to small town America.”
Indeed Obama’s trip abroad has received much attention, both in the United States and in foreign press, stirring up ever more fervour for the presumptive Democratic nominee. McCain for his part has had great difficulty in keeping pace with the Illinois Senator’s media exposure. Even today, his rebuttal to an editorial in the New York Times was rejected, seeming to dig him deeper into that exposure hole. This recent effort though may be a change in philosophy.
“It appears as though the McCain campaign has realized that trying to compete with Obama on the world stage is a losing battle. He seems to be trying to bring the effort back to America, small town USA,” said Scrape TV political analyst Gabriel Kinsey. “It’s unlikely to work honestly. Berlin, Germany is a legendary and historic city, the capital of one of the greatest nations on the planet. Berlin, New Hampshire has a population of ten thousand people, and that’s about it. I don’t doubt that McCain’s intentions are good, and that city is one of many American cities that could use real help, but the reality is at this point they are out to get elected, not to do good deeds. They can do that after they take office, but you have to get there first.”
The city itself though seems excited by the visit. The sleepy North Eastern town is typical small town America, with all the beauty and charm, and unfortunate economic pitfalls inherent in that lifestyle.
“We are ecstatic that Senator McCain is visiting our town. He is an American hero and the future President of the United States. It’s going to be a great day in our little town,” said Mayor David Bertrand.
Obama’s Berlin visit hasn’t been met with quite the same enthusiasm, fostering a mix of both exhalation and aggravation from either side of the political bench. Some though, have compared it to John F. Kennedy’s trip to the legendary city in 1963, the trip of the famous “...Ich bin ein Berliner” speech; a watershed moment in American and world politics.
As for McCain’s Berlin trip? Most people we spoke to couldn’t care less.
“There’s a Berlin in New Hampshire? Okay, cool,” said one man.
