THE NEW POLITICAL CORRECTNESS; UN-SKINNY, UN-TALL, UN-WHITE

Washington, D.C.  - Ever been caught using the word overweight? Vertically challenged? African-American? Ever felt that twinge of guilt whenever those words come out of your mouth? Thanks to a growing culture of increased acceptance, those feelings will disappear as new terms come into play in an attempt to make us a more tolerant world.

“Our culture is constantly changing and progressing. This is a sign of the times, a sign that we are becoming more accepting of other people, cultures, and beliefs,” Says sociologist Veronica Benson. “Terms from the past have always seemed bigoted or racist. We are now entering into a phase where we define people by more generic terms and not by anything that might make them stand out.”

But do terms like Un-Straight or Un-Young really make society a better place?

“It most certainly does,” Benson continues. “It allows people to not be singled out and to be a part of a group much bigger than one based on the colour of their skin.”

Definitions used to place people have certainly come a long way in the last hundred years, but do these new terms simply replace latent prejudice in an effort to make people feel better about themselves, or do they represent an attitudinal shift allowing people to get along better in society? Prejudice has long been a political and social battleground and the topic is only gaining momentum with this latest push.

One group that has been pushing acceptance of these new terms is the Never Include Gratuitous Genealogical Erudition Rationale Society. A spokesperson for the group, Verne Whitman,  issued a statement saying in part, “Our group has always advocated the exclusion of ideas and terms that could be used to advocate exclusion or inclusion of any member of our society on the basis of their personal characteristics. We believe this new terminology is a gateway to understanding that all members of civilized society should not be judged or assessed in any way shape or form. We strongly advocate the inclusion of terms such as these to better provide us with a more accepting society, provided it can be done in a way so as to not offend anyone.”

In an effort to better integrate these new terms into the lexicon, the group has been advocating change at the highest level. “We feel it’s profoundly important to get this issue before congress. They are the ones who are actually able to implement change across the spectrum. Things like having schools teach these new terms, passing laws to allow for better integration of these terms. Of course the problem with that is these government stooges are all the same, so it’s an uphill battle. But it’s a battle we vow to fight until true change comes,” continued Whitman.

No one we contacted in congress had even heard of the group and were aware that the issue existed at all. Caught just as unawares were students some local Universities we contacted, an arena that could undoubtedly act as a significant grass roots effort to drive these new terms into the modern vernacular.

“Huh? Never heard of them,” said one student. “I don’t really pay attention to issues and politics.”

It seems this will indeed be a long battle.
