GENETICALLY MODIFIED SUPER SALMON MAY MEAN DOOM FOR HUMANITY
October 7 2010
Washington, D.C. – There is no doubt that human beings have been the most successful species to ever step foot on planet Earth. True, the dinosaurs lasted millions of years longer than we have been around, surely a win from a purely
biological perspective, but humans have done something much more profound. Our spread to every corner of the globe and our penchant for manipulating the environment to suit us is something the dinosaurs never worked out, which ultimately resulted in their demise and has allowed us to succeed where they failed.
That success, however, does not guarantee survival for millions of years like our lizard antecedents enjoyed, and in fact, it is our rapid progress and success that could ultimately be our undoing. While the issues of environmental contamination are omnipresent in the modern narrative, and they are not doing our long term survival any favours, it is in our spread that the greatest danger lies. With nearly seven billion people on the planet the cold, hard reality is that we simply do not have enough resources to keep everyone alive. Being the adaptors we are however that is a problem hopefully fixed by our cleverness in the form of genetically modified foodstuffs. However such procedures carry inherent risks and the latest, a potential Super- Salmon, has many worried that we may have turned a corner from which there is no returning.
“The furore over this fish puts paid once and for all to the myth that US consumers are content eating GM food. Consumers are not, and in fact jammed up the White House telephone lines last week protesting any approval. Quite understandably the salmon industry is not happy either, as people will simply avoid all salmon rather than risk getting this stuff. Only those who stand to gain financially think this is a good idea,” said Eve Mitchell of Food and Water Watch Europe. “Aside from the financial and health concerns, there is the very real possibility that these animals will escape and cause massive disruption to the existing food chain, consuming available food and killing off other species.”
The genetically modified will be confined to isolated pens but it is believed their enhanced incredible super strength will allow them to break free of those pens.
“There is little doubt that there is very shortly going to be a major shortage of food
and that we need to do something quickly. The amount of arable land is being steadily reduced and farming facilities for all kinds of animal products are similarly finding themselves out of space, something that will only get worse as the population grows,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “That said, genetic modification does carry major risks. We have seen over and over again the perils of messing with nature and altering species to suit our needs. To wit, look at the events of Jurassic Park and how disastrously that ended, and I’m not talking about the sequels either.”
In that film genetically replicated dinosaurs broke free of their pens, killed a bunch of people, and caused millions of dollars of damage.
“The real danger for any species is in their attempts to defy nature. Mother Nature has this unquenchable rage and the ability to do whatever she wants to those who offend her. The dinosaurs learned that the hard way and they ended up dead, and the same could happen to us,” continued Poe. “On the flip side though it could just mean that salmon gets a lot cheaper. I enjoy a nice cut on the barbecue myself and I wouldn’t mind paying a little less in the future, even if it does damn future generations to face nature’s wrath.”
U.S. officials are reportedly looking to install a genetic ‘kill switch’ in all modified salmon, but it is believed that nature will find a way around such a device should it decide to unleash fish fury on the world.
