MILLIONS NOW FREE FROM THE ANNOYING SPARKLE OF STARS
November 4 2010
New York, NY – For centuries mankind had only the natural world on which to rely. Eventually though, and not that long ago, we started to see ways in which we could manipulate the world and adapt it to our own needs and not simply develop tools in
order to survive within the world we had been given. In today’s world the idea of manipulating the world is taken for granted because it is so common, something we do every time we fill up on gas or turn on the lights.
Because that manipulation is so ubiquitous in our world we oftentimes don’t simply utilize these tools, we embrace them without knowing how foreign they would have been to our ancestors. While there are many examples of such alterations to the natural order, it is artificial lighting that is perhaps the most profound and pervasive of all our creations. Without artificial light much of modern world simply would not exist. There would be no 24 hour Walmarts, and no trucks driving overnight to deliver goods to them. Our personal lives would also be dramatically different with our days ending as soon as the sun goes down. All that light though has had an impact on the natural world, the most prominent of which is the erosion of stars in the sky, something that comes as very much a relief to those who have long sought permanent daytime.
“The degree of star arrangement really depends on where you are. In a place like
Northern Canada or Siberia the sky is filled with stars, but in dense urban centres like New York the sky has all but been white washed with our light,” said Dr. Walton Sykes of the New York University. “This has led to areas where stars simply don’t exist and the entire night sky is lit up, not quite as brightly as the day time, but extremely bright so that it washes away any trace of stars, planets, and anything else that might be lurking out there.”
Recent polls have shown that many children in inner city schools simply do not know about the existence of stars at all.
“We learned a long time ago that simply relying on the gifts of nature was not going to accomplish what we wanted, was not going to give us the kind of world that would allow us to thrive. Since really understanding that we have been able to change the world to fit our needs and now we are on the verge of perpetual daylight,” continued Sykes. “This will allow unheard of productivity and finally free us from the darkness of night. It will also allow us to be free of those irritating little pinpricks in the sky which have disrupted night for millions of years. Imagine how beautiful sheer blackness would have been, something we simply will never see.”
The moon will likely remain at least partially visible even in urban centres.
“There has been a movement in recent years to try and turn artificial light back down onto the planet and while some places are starting to implement such technologies, thankfully the majority have stayed away. The hard reality is that by committing such actions we will be faced with half a world in darkness forever,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “While it is certainly true that much of our light escapes into space, that is the only way to light up the night sky. If we could create some kind of dome that would trap light, well that would be ideal, but that technology is far away. For now the best thing to do is just keeping pumping out light and brighten the darkness for everyone.”
It is not believed that the Earth will become as bright as the sun anytime soon.
