NEW STUDY FINDS THAT IT IS REALLY WINDY INSIDE TORNADOES
August 25 2010
Lawrence, KS – There are many impressive natural disasters in the world but there is perhaps none more awe inspiring or frightening than a tornado. By far the least devastating of all major disasters, tornadoes are nonetheless terrifying. They are like
lion strikes, they come in and tear the place apart and are gone almost as quickly. They come with little or no warning and do nothing but destroy. They are not a part of some larger system, they simply exist to destroy and that is perhaps what makes them so scary, all they do is kill.
Tornadoes are also very much a mystery to science due to that nature. While we know how they form we still aren’t exactly sure of their make up or what purpose they serve. That mystery is what a group of researchers at Kansas University in Lawrence have been studying and have come to a few undeniable conclusions. Led by head climatologist Dan Webb, the group studied the patterns and movements of

tornado touchdowns across the United States and Canada over the course of five years and have brought new insight into the nature and rationale behind nature’s most fearsome assassin. The big revelation thus far appears to be that the inside of tornadoes are really, really windy.
“We have been able to compile data from all across North America over the last five years and have been able to craft from that the most comprehensive models yet created. They show the way in which tornadoes move according to their size and through the destruction they leave on the ground we are able to determine how they move internally and how that impacts their movement across the landscape,” said Webb. “The data shows a really interesting set of dynamics going on inside tornadoes but the biggest come away we have been able to ascertain is that all parts of tornadoes are really windy, particularly the inside which is a whirlwind of activity, so to speak.”
The researchers also officially determined that most tornadoes are really scary.
“One thing we also have determined beyond a doubt is that tornadoes will just rip houses and people apart. There is no possibility that these things could be whisked away whole and deposited someplace else fully intact. As you can likely guess this is major issue for the people of Kansas but we can definitively say that if you get caught in a tornado you will be killed,” continued Webb. “The vast majority of people are killed by flying debris not by the wind itself. Basically these things suck up debris and hurtle it around really, really fast and if you get in the way of one of those things, like say a mailbox or a Buick, you are going to be killed, absolutely no doubt about it. This is not some sort of magical transport, it is a killing machine and really, really windy.”
The researchers did not investigate the possible existence of Oz.
“No one ever wants to be caught in a natural disaster of any type but the reality is that tornadoes are the ones you should wish for if anything is going to happen. They strike intermittently and they leave the majority of people alone. Obviously if you are unfortunate enough to get hit then you are in trouble but the odds of that happening are pretty low in the big picture,” said Scrape TV Disaster analyst Walter Lim. “That said the best thing is to just move away completely. Move to Canada which gets cold and snowy but the ground doesn’t shake and the sky doesn’t come out to get you. It’s pretty placid there all in all.”
The researchers also stated that no amount of hairspray will make a difference in the eye of a tornado.
