SCIENTISTS CREATE WOLVERINE; OTHER X-MEN TO FOLLOW
October 2 2010
Dresden, Germany – Supermen of one sort or another have long been a dream for mankind. Aside from the fantasy of super strength or flight, the notion of indestructibility and perpetual life is something shared by all human beings. It is in fact

something innately human. Our knowledge of our mortality forces us to want to rebel against it, to push against the shuttering of the mortal coil making dreams of superpowers all the more sensible and rational, despite their inherent irrationality.
The longest standing superman is undoubtedly Hercules whose tales of might and strength have inspired similar stories for thousands of years. Tales of dragon slayers and unstoppable warriors have inspired modern day tales of supermen now portrayed in comic books and movies and pushed the dreams of both children and scientists to try to accomplish those seemingly fanciful attributes. While certain traits such as flight and super speed may never be achievable, other less psychics-defying attributes are certainly within reach. Now science has finally brought one of those enviable traits into reality, the indestructible skeletal structure of the famous X-Man Wolverine. A new titanium foam developed by scientists at the Fraunhofer
Institute for Manufacturing Technology and Advanced Materials Research will now enable average human beings to embed their bones with the metallic substance, making them virtually indestructible and ushering in a whole new era of supermen with teleportation and laser eyes already in development.
“This is not quite the example we see in the Wolverine character. His metal, Adamantium, is a fictional metal. Titanium metal alloy is the closest thing we have in the real world. This alloy is already used in bone replacement but this new foam will allow for it to be used in many more people,” said lead researcher Peter Quadbeck. “This is by no means a complete solution and for it to be totally effective the entire skeletal structure will need to be coated in the alloy but this is a strong in between step. WE have not yet developed the claws but that is being worked upon.”
In the comics, the character of Wolverine who is already possessed of super rapid healing has his bones coated in metal rendering them indestructible.
“This is certainly a compelling development that will no doubt be very useful in many applications including the restoration of severely damaged bones. Titanium is far stronger than bone and can carry much heavier loads, however bone is bale to flex and marrow has significant health benefits meaning total replacement may not be feasible,” said Scrape TV Medical analyst Dr. Phillip Waites. “However, coating the bones may be possible. The technique will have to be improved upon but in the foreseeable future we could have actual wolverine-like men and women wandering around our streets. The only real question will be one of their morality and what side of human equation they will come to rest on.”
The optic blast utilized by X-Men leader Cyclops is being developed by researchers at UCLA.
“We are really at the precipice of what can be accomplished by science and technology and there is little doubt that it will eventually create literal supermen. While that future is certainly frightening, it is a reality and what we need to start concerning ourselves with is what that will mean morally and ethically,” continued Waites. “Of course if these supermen become all powerful then it may not matter what we average mortals think or feel. They will be in charge and we will be powerless under their feet, rendering us forever under the yoke of servitude and slavery and eventual ignominious death. The age of the mutants has truly arrived.”
It’s believed unlikely that any current iterations of mutants would be able to stop Magneto and the Brotherhood of Mutants.
