UNICORN DISCOVERED IN LAOS AND MURDERED FOR IT’S MAGICAL HORN
September 19 2010
Vientiane, Laos – Throughout history cultures have created mythological creatures, a practice that has continued to the modern day. These creatures have had varying purposes and various influences throughout those cultures, a tradition that continues
today. Tales of creatures such as dragons and griffin have spawned modern tales such as the Loch Ness Monster and Bigfoot but as has been shown throughout the historical record, these creatures were either simply cases of mistaken identities or simply manufactured altogether, as will undoubtedly be the case for modern beasts.
One constant through almost all mythological has been a fearsome persona, a monstrous appeal designed to inspire awe and fear. Some beasts though are the exception and in the case of one, The Unicorn, the exact opposite is true. Throughout history Unicorns have been a unique mythological creature, an animal know for docility and beauty and magic, something far a flung from the fire breathing, spiked beasts that constitute the bulk of such animals. Despite being talked about and investigated for centuries, no unicorn has ever been discovered in nature or the fossil record. Now though comes a report that an actual unicorn was spotted and captured in Laos. Unfortunately, it now appears that the animal has died in captivity and been eaten by locals, relegating the animal once again to mythology.
“The government of Lao PDR and WCS are to be commended for their rapid response and efforts to save this animal. We hope the information gained from the incident can be used to ensure that this is not the last saola anyone has a chance to see,” said William Robichaud of the IUCN. “The death of this saola is unfortunate. But at least it confirms an area where it still occurs and the government will immediately move to strengthen conservation efforts there as long as focus on the conservation of the species and make sure people understand that these are not magical animals possessed of special abilities.”
The animal is actually called a ‘saola’ and has two horns, though was reportedly extremely rare.
“Technically this is not a unicorn, at least not one by normal standards, however it does appear that this was a very rare animal and it is upsetting that it has died. This animal isn’t quite as rare as an actual unicorn because it does exist but now it appears to be relegated to the same fate as other unicorns,” said Scrape TV Zoology analyst Cambridge Walker. “It does appear that some parts of the animal have been shipped to medical facilities to be studied but unfortunately the important parts, notably the meat and the horns, have been removed by locals for their own uses. Now the question becomes whether or not we will start to see hordes of people storming into the jungle trying to find other members of the species so that they will also be able to share in whatever magical abilities these animals possess.”
There have been no reports of any magical events in the country.
“Personally I’m interested in the animal from a scientific perspective but if it does turn out that that magical events start to occur well then I’m in. I mean its magic and from a scientific perspective that is really fascinating. I mean I will be making a trip there if that happens,” continued Walker. “Of course if this was the last of this species, which is possible, it could be that these magical tools will be in the hands of a limited few which could be very dangerous in the long run. Hopefully this wasn’t an actual unicorn because things could go very badly if that’s the case.”
The Lao government denied rumours that it had expropriated the magical horns from the animal.
