LORD OF THE FLIES SCENARIO POSSIBLE AFTER SPACE STATION SUPPLY SHIP CRASHES
August 24 2011
Moscow, Russia – There is always a big risk when travelling into space. It is, after all, space. Incidents throughout the history of the human space programs have proven the great challenge and great perils associated with travelling into the Heavens. While safety procedures have certainly improved since the travel began, the process is still fraught with peril.
That is something the people on the International Space Station are currently dealing with after word came that the much needed supply ship destined for the facility exploded shortly after taking off, leaving them with limited food and reading material.
The unmanned vessel failed to reach orbit and exploded, for as yet unknown reasons, only minutes after launch from Kazakhstan leaving the six men, three Russians, two Americans, and one Japanese, with limited food and water supplies and no relief in sight.
“We are currently in the midst of investigating this incident. Once our survey has been completed we will be in a better position to comment. We are currently assessing the situation on the space station and formulating a plan as to how we will deal with those issues. We have no plans on letting them starve,” said a spokesperson for the Russian space agency. “We believe they have sufficient supplies until we are able to launch another vessel. We do not anticipate leaving them alone there and forcing them into a situation where they will be forced into extreme situations such as cannibalism.”
The station is believed to have two to three months worth of supplies, assuming the men don’t indulge.
“We do not believe the situation aboard the vessel is critical at this stage. We believe that they will be able to survive for quite a long time on the supplies which they already have and once we are ready we will send another shipment,” continued the spokesperson. “We have been in contact with the station and assured them that they are not being abandoned and that we will not force them into a desperate situation from which they will never return physically, morally, or ethically. This is not the type of situation which we would like to have and we will work to ensure that will not happen.”
Thus far, the men aboard have apparently not started to panic but experts admit that it is possible such a thing could occur in short order.
“In an insecure situation, the best thing to have is an outside source, something which assures you that things will be alright, a kind of safety line. That has now been cut off for these men and could cause them to behave irrationally. They may know that supplies will eventually come, but the interruption will cause concern which could lead to panic and possibly dangerous situations,” said Scrape TV Psychology analyst Dr. Sarah Welp. “A lot depends on their nature and their relationships with one another. Problems will become exaggerated and issues that seemed simple will erupt and become much more serious, particularly once supplies start to dwindle. That could result in serious issues and possibly and an end to the entire space station program, as well as all the cannibalism and murder.”
Sergei Volkov, one of the men aboard the facility, has apparently already been sending strange messages home.
