MARS PRETTY MUCH READY FOR HUMAN HABITATION RIGHT NOW

December 24 2011

Sydney, Australia – One day human beings will live off planet Earth. Not only is the technology inevitable, not to mention the drive unstoppable, the need to live somewhere other than Earth makes it essential that we find someplace else. There simply isn’t going to be enough room for future populations on out little blue world and that means finding more space.earth

Space, of course, is where we will find that. While there are many candidates for human relocation, the best by far is Mars. It is close, it is large, and it is the nearest thing we have to Earth-like conditions outside our planet. That makes it the strongest and smartest choice for future colonies. And now that we know little green men aren’t waiting there to slaughter us, the planet is free for the taking.

Actually living off-world is a much more complicated enterprise than just finding a location. While similar, Mars is not totally hospitable to human life, or at least that’s what we thought for a long time. New research has thrown that assumption into the red sands of Mars, finding that huge swathes of the planet are pretty much already primed for human life, giving us the chance to move sooner rather than later.

“What we tried to do, simply, was take almost all of the information we could and put it together and say 'is the big picture consistent with there being life on Mars?’ And the simple answer is yes... There are large regions of Mars that are compatible with terrestrial life,” said Charley Lineweaver, lead researcher on the study in Sydney.

In fact, the planet may actually have more habitable space than Earth, albeit underground.underground house

It’s not clear if Australian standards for human habitation are the same as most other peoples, but it’s likely close.

Lineweaver, it should be noted, has not packed his bags despite urging from his neighbours following the finding.

“This is certainly interesting news but I guess the question is going to be whether or not people want to live underground. Living on the surface, with the technology we have, simply isn’t going to work and everyone will have to live underground, forever. No vacations on the surface, you will never see the sun again. I wouldn’t want to do that,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “After a few generations people will get used to it, no doubt, but getting there will be a tough thing. It’s hard to convince people to become troll-like, even if it is on another planet.”

It’s believed likely that novelty of living on another planet would likely wear off pretty quickly after being forced into subterranean dwellings forever.undergorund home

“Eventually we may not have a choice, or at least the people we send will not have a choice. I’m sure most important people will stay behind on Earth and the lesser folks will be sent off the colonize Mars, not unlike Australia. Gives a new meaning to Down Under,” continued Poe. “Hopefully when that happens they won’t build up massive resentment to us here on Earth, enjoying the sun and beaches like in Australia. That would be sad and if they decided to build an army, well that would likely end poorly.”

Lineweaver’s wife is apparently the one keeping him from moving.
