NASA INSISTS THAT APOLLO 18 MOVIE IS FICTION, ASTRONAUTS NOT SO SURE
September 3 2011
Washington, D.C. – It’s perhaps a little difficult for people of today to understand the fascination people once had with travel to the moon. It is, after all, something which has already happened. For people who grew up after the Apollo missions ended it is not an event, it is history, and thus not all that interesting.
In their time, though, the Apollo missions were a very big deal. Eventually the public’s fascination with them ended, and the budgetary and socio-political motivations evaporated, and so too did manned travel to our nearest neighbour. For some that has been a tragedy, for others nothing much at all. However, a new movie out this weekend has shown that perhaps the Apollo missions did not end for the reason we have all been told, something NASA denies but something which many in the know have started to confirm.
“When I first saw the trailer for the movie I was knocked back, literally. We had always heard rumbling of this kind of thing, that there was actually another flight they didn’t tell anyone about, but no one could find evidence of it. Now they did,” said a former Apollo astronaut who preferred to remain anonymous. “There were a few guys involved with the program that just vanished and now we know what happened to them. It’s great that this has finally come to light, it shows how dangerous space travel really is. That should make it a little more exciting for people out there.”
The movie purports to have lost footage from the Apollo 18 mission in which the astronauts uncover malevolent aliens on the Moon. NASA declined to participate in the film and has derided it from the start.
“Apollo 18 is not a documentary. The film is a work of fiction, and we always knew that. We were minimally involved with this picture,” said Bert Ulrich, a spokesperson for the agency. “We never even saw a rough cut. The idea of portraying the Apollo 18 mission as authentic is simply a marketing ploy. Perhaps a bit of a 'Blair Witch Project' strategy to generate hype.”
NASA has always maintained that the Apollo program ended with number 17.
“This is certainly an interesting debate. I would imagine that NASA is probably telling
the truth simply because if this were lost footage they would be able to make copyright claims against the movie studio. That would have prevented the release, but here we are with the movie in theatres,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “I would think that if this were in fact real footage they would want to do whatever they could to keep it secret. The last thing they want is for people to think there are creepy aliens or ghosts or whatever it is in the movie on the movie. That just wouldn’t help the space program very much. I mean they could be lying, they never really did give good reason for ending the program in the first place and this would be a good reason, but I have serious doubt about the veracity of the film. It’s probably just fiction.”
The company behind the film, Dimension Films, will also release ‘Piranha 3DD’ later this year which they claim is based on a true story.
