NEW THEORY SUGGESTS MARS WAS ONCE COLD, WET, AND MISERABLE
August 31 2011
Washington, D.C. – The mystery of Mars gets deeper. Our solar twin has always been a source of fascination for human beings, but in recent years discoveries on the planet have actually made it more compelling than ever. The reality of the red planet has actually only increased the mystery and fascination around it.
A new report has added to that mystery, suggesting that the planet was once a cold and wet place, very similar to many areas of Earth. While the notion of water on Mars is nothing new, the suggesting of a complex ecosystem that could have supported life is something else entirely. Not new perhaps, but still fairly radical. Now though this new research indicates that the planet could have indeed supported life in those conditions, albeit miserable and complaining life.
“We had long believed that Mars would have been similar to Earth in many ways, but the general assumption is that the planet was relatively warm, like us, but that may not have been the case. In fact it may have been pretty miserable,” said one researcher. “Especially in the northern climates. It may have been the kind of place where if you got wet, you stayed wet. Anyone who has done any kind of camping knows what that’s like. If that cold and damp atmosphere spread to other areas on the planet it may give us and understanding as to what happened to life on the planet.”
Because of the size of the planet temperature variation would have been minimal. Mars a little more than half the size of Earth.
“If true it is possible that life on the planet simply didn’t want to live there anymore. Damp is good, cold is not. I mean you wouldn’t want to live there and neither would Martians, even if they had lived there their entire lives. Perhaps even more so if they had,” continued the researcher. “We are not talking about a mass exodus of course. The life on that planet would have been limited in their space flight capability simply because they would have been not much more advanced than microbes, but gone is gone.”
One theory suggest that Mars may have been struck by a major asteroid which disrupted it’s rotation and burned off its atmosphere, which would also have made things miserable for life on the planet.
“Remember, they wouldn’t have had warm clothing or galoshes. This would have been
a very uninviting place for most life forms and so it might have been a welcome respite when the planet died out. The life would have perhaps been dry for the first time in their existences and that, well it feels pretty good to get dry when you’ve been wet and cold for a long time,” continued the researcher. “I’ve been there, I know. I mean not Mars, I haven’t been there. Not to suggest such a thing. Just that being wet and cold really sucks and all life pretty much understands that. I’m sure Martians hated it just as much as we do.”
Thus far, no ancient camping sites have been found on the planet.
