RUSSIAN SPACE PROBE CRASHES INTO PACIFIC, ON EARTH, NOT MARS WHERE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE
January 16 2012
Moscow, Russia – There is no taking away the success in space exploration that Russia has had. Not only did that country send the first manmade device into space, not only did they send the first animal and the first human into space, it has also been a stalwart in the Heavens, maintaining a stable human presence beyond the Earth for decades. Unfortunately, most of those successes have been right in the neighbourhood.
As much as Russian has tried, moving beyond Earth’s orbit has been a major challenge. Other space agencies including those in the United States, Europe, China, and even India have managed to send devices to other bodies and beyond for years, but for some reason Russia has had a great deal of difficulty leaving our little blue marble.
There were high hopes for the Phobos-Grunt, an ambitious project that would have returned samples from the Martian moon of Phobos, but like all other Russian efforts to extend their reach, the mission failed, crashing into the Pacific Ocean, nowhere even near its destination. Still, Russian officials are optimistic about the project, culling a lot of data about how objects from space crash into the Pacific Ocean.
“I’m taking personal control of the investigation into the reasons for the Phobos-Grunt accident. I am expecting Roscosmos’ promised report on the reasons for the accidents, the names of the anti-heroes and also its view on the prospects for developing the space sector up to 2030,” said Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.
The probe cost $170 million and carried a second device, a Chinese Mars orbiter, which also sank deep into the Pacific.
It’s believed that the data from the crash was inconclusive with the orbiter only transmitting partial information before smashing into the Ocean and sinking to the bottom.
“The people at Roscosmos are sure going to be in trouble after this. I mean its one thing to have the mission utterly and completely fail, but then to not get anything at all from the mission. I mean nothing, not a thing, just plop into the ocean. That’s pretty bad,” said Scrape TV Science analyst Dr. Howard Poe. “In the interim the United States has launched, very successfully, the most ambitious Mars program yet and here Russia is watching the seas. Heads are going to roll, I can tell you that.”
Officially, Russia has done away with Gulags though you never know.
“I guess you could take it as a learning lesson. I mean just about every other country who has a space program has been able to break Earth orbit at least once but no one has had the kind of record that Russia has had and that alone should warranty a study and some degree of praise,” continued Poe. “I mean without failure we can’t have success and Russia has shown us, over and over again, how not to do things. How to fail at making this thing work and we have to really thank them for that. Without Russia the whole world might not be successful at launching vessels to Mars. They really show us what can go wrong and because of that everyone else is having great success.”
Zambia’s space agency is reportedly prepping a Mars mission which will likely get further than the Phobos-Grunt.
