DANNY GREEN DEFEATS ROY JONES JR IN NEW SPORT CALLED ‘BOXING’

December 4 2009

Sydney, Australia – Australia has been the home of many things that have eventually made their way around the world. Mel Gibson, Crocodile Dundee, the boomerang, and of course Steve Irwin are all some of the global brands that have danny green
come from Down Under. Unto themselves such contributions might seem minor, but when one considers that they have come from a nation of a little over 20 million people, isolated in the south Pacific, that was once home to a massive prison colony, the achievement is all the more impressive.

Now the country has introduced a new invention to the world, and this time it’s a sport. Called ‘Boxing’ the sport pits two men against each other in a squared circle similar to a wrestling ring. The men then fight for at 3 minute rounds with each match scheduled for twelve rounds in total. Both players wear padded gloves and mouth guards to protect against damage. The sport was showcased in underwhelming fashion as Australian Danny Green defeated American Roy Jones Jr. in the first internationally televised match in less than a single round. Despite the less than formidable match it’s believed that the showcase of the sport will help to secure international interest in the nascent sport.

“The arena was It was empty, cold, quiet. The nerves began to bite at me. I thought ‘This is good, this is healthy, this is what you should be going through. This is danny green roy jones jr
positive, this is natural, this is what you have got to go through’,” said Green after the fight.  “I knew he was in a lot of trouble. He was groaning. I did everything I planned. There is positivity when you've got that self belief that you can do what no one thinks you can do. That's why this victory is so much sweeter.”

It’s not clear if that kind of eloquence is prominent across the ‘boxing’ scene, but if it were it would mark a significant departure from the generally accepted perception of athletes.

“It’s really a fascinating sport. It’s kind of a blend of professional wrestling and MMA but without the grabbing and men rolling around on the mat with one another. It’s also not just brute violence. Each boxer has a kind of strategy, or at least it appears that way. It’s almost a science in a way so it will be interesting to see whether or not that can make waves in other countries,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “I’m sure the sport will change as it makes its transition to other countries but Australia will always be the birthplace. It’s not often that new sports come by so this is a moment to celebrate. Whether or not it takes off in the mainstream, it is most definitely a compelling and interesting sport.”

Because of the violence involved it’s believed that tight restrictions will have to put in place to protect participants and fans alike.boxing

“Obviously, because this isn’t a team sport it’s going to differ from the major sports leagues. I’d imagine that showcase style events would work in the short term at least. Places like Las Vegas and Atlantic City which have this glitzy atmosphere would likely be a great place to stage these matches and help to raise the profile of the sport in the United States,” continued Marvins. “It will be interesting to see how it competes with other combat sports like MMA and UFC. They have become so ubiquitous now that it’s hard to imagine another sport coming along and usurping their position but you never know. The promise is there but the sport has a long way to go.”

Firm rules have been established in Australia such as separating fighters by weight class and no hitting below the belt.
