DETROIT LIONS STILL HAVING TROUBLE WITH OBLONG BALL
November 25 2009
Detroit, MI – It’s been a long and hard few years for the city of Detroit. A dying car industry hit even harder by the recession has forced many people to simply abandon the city and everything that once made it the engine of the nation. Many have even

been forced to abandon their deceased loved ones, unable to pay for funerals, a symbol of the decay of the city. Alongside the demise of the city has been the demise of the Detroit Lions. One of the oldest teams in the NFL, owned by the Ford family, has fared as well as the city which once loved it so much.
That decay culminated in the first ever 0-16 season last year, a record of futility that no one thought possible in today’s NFL. Things have gotten a little better for the Lions recently, notching their second win of the season last Sunday, but things are still far from the heyday of the team and the city. That last win, a one point victory against the equally lowly Cleveland Browns may have shed new light on to what has been ailing the team and it appears to be related to presence of the brown, oblong ball present in every football game.
“We are very happy with the victory yesterday. It shows that our hard work and talent is paying off and is just the start of us making a comeback. As far as the controversy over the last few minutes, we don’t pay any attention to that. Our guys kept their heads and did what they needed to do in order to secure a win,” said Lions head coach Jim Schwartz. “With every game we see little improvements and little changes that help us move forward. We expect to pull out a few more wins this season and to build on that for next year. The biggest change we’ve seen is that many of our guys are getting more comfortable touching the football which was really a big issue last year.”
Schwartz noted that part of the reason for that change was more one on one time with the balls, allowing all players to adjust to its presence. They also spent a signifcant amount of time in training camp practicing without the ball, allowing players to get comfortable with basics.
“You can definitely see a change in the way they are interacting with the balls this season. There’s still a little hesitation with some of the players but they have still made dramatic improvements. In training camp they were playing casually with the balls, sleeping with them, eating with them and those techniques seem to have yielded strong results,” said Scrape TV Sports analyst Mark Marvins. “The defence still looks a little hesitant but that’s likely because they have limited interaction with the balls in practice. The offensive players though seem to have a real handle on them and are passing and catching with the all kinds of confidence. It will take a little while to become totally comfortable but they’ll get there.”
The Browns, conversely, have apparently been spending as little time near footballs as possible which helps to explain their dismal record this year.
“It’s been a totally different thing this year and in watching the Browns and they way they approached the ball it reminds me of how far we’ve come. I remember being that scared and know that I never want to go back to feeling that way ever again,” said Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. “It’s the best feeling in the world now, going out and grabbing that ball, throwing it down the field. Half the time I don’t even care if anyone catches it, it just feels great throwing it and not felling like this thing in my hand is going to hurt me in some way.”
The St. Louis Rams, struggling at 1-9, have reached out to the Lions for advice, citing an almost paralysing fear on the parts of their players.
