GEORGIAN OFFICALS SUSPECT RUSSIAN INVOLVEMENT IN LUGER’S DEATH
February 12 2010
Vancouver, Canada – It has been said that there are no more fierce fights than the fights between family members. Brothers and sisters, parents and children, everyone is used to the ferocity of those battles which more often than not start with a lot of
yelling and end with reconciliation. The same often happens with nations whose battles, such as those in the Middle East or between Japan and Korea, shed a great deal of blood in ways that only families can truly understand.
Such has been the case between Georgia and the Soviet Union, particularly over the last few years. Neighbours for centuries the two nations were forced to live in much closer habitation during the Soviet years, something which apparently caused a great deal of animosity. Incidents like the 2008 invasion of South Ossetia are just the latest example of the head butting between the two nations, but likely to be the last. Now another headache has formed between the two following the death of Georgian Luger Nodar Kumaritashvili during a training run on the opening day of the Olympic Games. Here, where nations put aside their difference for bouts of friendly competition, Georgian officials have already started to drop hints that they believe there may have been Russian involvement in the fatal crash and are actively pursuing the investigation from that angle.
“I am sorry, it is difficult to remain composed, it is a very sad day. The International Olympic Committee is in deep mourning. Here you have a young athlete who lost his life in pursuing his passion. He had a dream to participate in the Olympic Games. He trained hard and he had this fatal accident. I have no words to say what we feel,” said IOC chief Jacques Rogge. “Our first thoughts are with the family, friends and colleagues of the athlete. We will not talk about the specifics of the accident or how it will affect other competitions at the Games until we have the results of the investigation.”
An investigation Georgian officials have strongly hinted might lead to the doorstep of their gargantuan neighbour to the north.
“Right now we are worried about our team and our families. Nodar was well loved by everyone and his loss is incredible. We are literally without words regarding it, but we
must have answers as to why this happened. We know the track is very fast and even very experienced lugers have been having trouble, but the question is why is that the case? That is what we need to know,” said a Georgian official who preferred to remain anonymous. “We have seen a great number of strange incidents leading up to these games which we all believe have been tied to foreign interference and we must investigate whether or not that is what has happened here. We do not want to be involved in politics but I can tell you that there are more than a few Russian officials who have been watching our training and that is enough for me.”
The Whistler track is regarded as one of the fastest in the world, challenging even the most experienced lugers. Early indications are that the speed of the track combined with a lack of familiarity with it and the relatively limited experience and training of the Georgian luger led to the incident.
“We must see the track and the sled to see whether or not there has been any manipulation. We will also of course work with Olympic officials as well as the FIL to determine whether or not there has been any interference,” continued the official. “We suspect there will be some sign that something wrong has taken place and if that is the case, we will follow up with appropriate action.”
Russian officials denied having been involved, or even knowing that Georgia had an Olympic team.
